Transmission
Does this game allow automatic transmission? It looks fun, but I don't know how to use a manual.

I also heard it runs in Internet Explorer, that seems weird. So it's not like a regular video game? It's like a Facebook game?

Thanks.

Oh dear god no. No no no no no no no no, oh haaaaeeeeellllll no. This ain't some sort of javascript Facebook game. This is a straight up program launched via the browser. With Facebook, it's all loaded via whatever embedded software that's allowed by various html scripts on that web page. This is something that you have to download and it gets updated, content is added, it functions just like any other game. The difference is that it is entirely server based. No internet connection, no service (as of yet, they have said they're looking into an actual offline test mode, but nothing as of now).

And yes, there's various assists to help you out, but not to the degree of what you'd find in games like Forza, GT, or NFS. There may be an auto shift function, which is highly not recommended because learning how and when to shift can be the difference between 1st and 2nd, but there's no TCS, ABS, or Stability control.

Thanks.

I was confused because the posts I was reading about the game stated that people needed a browser to play it. I thought the game was a Java game or something.

There is a practice mode so maybe I can use that to learn how to shift. I have Dirt 3 so I can practice shifting in that game too. I usually just use automatic.

I don't know much about cars but I like the racing games. I have no idea what most of the vehicle settings do, so I have a lot to learn.

If you ever played Battlefield 3, it's launched like that. You use the browser as, well, like a server browser, but it launches an external application stored on your system.

It's a full blown game, just the website is more of an authentication/connection server. :)

Oddly, Dirt 3 i find is harder to shift in haha. ;)

The only game I've played is Dirt 3. I'm going to try iRacing later today. I'm not sure I'll know what to do. It looks like you can only do races during specific times of the year.

Go through the starting docs when you join.

Races run every hour or 2 but for the lesser popular series people tend to all show up at the same regular time slots.

As stated this is a full blown hardcore motorsport simulator that uses a browser to launch the game and access race information and forum areas.

Enable 'Auto-clutch' in the game options once it's launched using the browser. No you cannot use auto transmission.

Dirt 3 is an simcade game. iRacing makes viturally everything else feel like mario kart.

Ideally you want to be able to run 10 laps without running off track before you even think about racing. That could take you many hours of practice.

Don't race to win in rookies, just race to survive and level up past rookies to where all the great respectful racing is found.

Good luck.

Races occur all year, but they do have "seasons" that follow close in line with the seasons of the year. Right now we're in the middle of season 2 i believe. Season 3 starts sometime in june, then season 4 goes the rest of the year. :D

You can race in the same series multiple times a day (Example, i once did 3 skip barber races in a 3 hour period) and they offer "hosted" sessions so you can race ridiculousness, like NASCAR at Bathurst. :D

Actually yes, there is an auto shift feature. It's more meant for those who are handicapped or disabled, but if someone where to feel that they can't shift properly (look here at America. How many kids are actually learning how to drive a stick?), then they can use it. Trust me, I thought the same as you, and had to actually look at it lol.

Simulation, simcade, arcade... It don't matter. When it comes to shifting (which is why she brought up practicing in Dirt 3), any game can help realize proper points to shift. The exact points will obviously be different because of different physics models, but anything can be used to learn how to shift. Hell, I learned how to shift at the age of 10 thanks to GT on the PS1. Granted it didn't help when I turned 16 and was banned from the family car cause I kept trying to power shift, but I knew how to shift thanks to GT lmao.
