It is playable. But Highly and I mean highly recommended with a wheel.

Basically, don't buy this game without a wheel or a flight stick (I know a few people who use those)

I wouldn't bother with IRacing without a steering wheel. It will just leave you frustrated and disappointed.

Yes, I have played it with PS3 control pad, it has settings to adjust for control pad users and is very workable. I have played with a control pad on racing sims for years, and I can keep up with steering wheel racers.

As stated above, you can play without a steering wheel, and you can be good with. I know of someone who do it because he has disabilities that prevent him from using a racing wheel and pedals.
But to me it breaks the immersion...
The same way I'm using a flight stick for flight sims, and not mouse/keyboard or pad, even if it is doable...

Playing iRacing without a wheel is like trying to thread a needle blindfolded. Using a gamepad the steering wheel will insta lock to the left or right if you push it all the way as there's no steering assist for controllers. At the very least get a flight stick as it's much easier to have progressive inputs.

If you're gonna use a pad for a while, here's a tip if you don't already know. Helped me out a lot when I was forced without a wheel for a few months. Push the steering stick up at all times. It'll hurt like hell until you get used to it, but you can use the rim as a steering wheel so that you're not flicking the steering all over the place with left or right movements that kill your line.

it most certainly is possible to play w/o a wheel...you can also compete w/a controller...takes prac like all things but i also have grip tape on the analogs and use a madkatz controller w/extrememly stiff analogs....the 360 controller has far to much "play" in the analogs for me i cant even keep it straight....i have double digit wins, always race hard (even as rookie), top 5 like 36% all w/a controller...it certainly can b done...that said i think it should always b a goal to get a wheel sometime in the future i know i am

Yes, it is, I didn't see it recommened, but the Microsoft Speed Wheel (made for the Xbox360) is a great controller choice for iRacing. It gives you the precision of a 180 degree wheel at a fraction of the cost (they can be found for $10 or so used) All you will need is the PC Dongle for Xbox360 controllers, and it's pretty much plug and play. If you have any questions on either, let me know and I'll assist you as much as I can.

You're gonna have a bad time without a wheel.

This is true, but there are options which are better than others until you can get a quality wheel (aka Logitech G25/27, Fanatec, or Thrustmaster T300 or T500.

I highly recommend the Logitech G27 for anyone interested in IRacing, (if you're going to spend the money to play IRacing, there really isn't any reason not to buy a wheel)

For a little over $200 you can get the G27, and it comes with 3 pedals on the floor, an H-pattern shifter, and a really decent wheel. (it's a good wheel!)

There are a number of brake pedal mods out there for it that can make it very effective for competition. (I recommend at least getting a progressive spring mod)

If you're serious about IRacing check out (gotta post both, Darren and Sean are both important members of the community)
