Haven't purchased yet, some questions
I'm obviously on PC, so if I need to buy a racing wheel, what brand is the most stable wheel that doesn't cost a ton? Also, I have an old Microsoft Sidewinder wheel/pedals that I pulled out of the basement, is that usable or do I definitely need something new?

As for the actual game, are there a lot of people that just drive to create pileups or is the game fun to play as a noob? Was hoping I could use the Sidewinder but don't want to buy the game and find out differently. Thanks!

You can try the sidewinder, but no idea if it works.

If you are looking into wheels, look into direct drive and load-cell pedals.

Moza and Fanatec have some affordable bundles. I have Moza-stuff since this year and very happy with it.

It's got its ups and downs and certain series are more prone to incidents.

They have a pretty strict racing code and a protesting system for incidents.

I was able to configure the Sidewinder on Windows 10 but is there a way to test if it would work? There's no room for any of the direct drive setups, plus the prices are crazy.

Not possible to 'testdrive' without a subscription.

Just mail the question to support@iracing.com

There are budget direct-drive setups though. 2nd hand might also be an option to get something nice under 500 bucks.

Use something cheap when you start, if you end up loving it and playing it a lot then upgrade to something else. Direct drive is great but its lot of money to sink into something you may not enjoy. I started with a logitech G27 and played until the thing wore out.

If you've never done sim racing before be prepared to spend a fair bit of time getting used to the feeling.

Sidewinder should work as its usb.

its not that serious, i just copped a thrustmaster t150 for like 100 bucks n its works really good.

I also just started, and its hard, not too many pileups because of safety ratings but its hard and people crash for sure.

Eh, people complain about top splits too. There will be overly aggressive people no matter what split or what game you play.

Personally, I just focus more on avoiding people than being fastest, especially for the first couple of laps. People usually crash out before lap 3. I don't even think about winning races, and I'm still usually in the top 5 just because of all the people wrecking.

In my opinion, the trick is to not get caught up in other people's bad driving. If they want to roleplay as Max Verstappen and wipe everyone out with amateur dive bombs, that's on them. If I even get a whiff that someone's going to try a lunge, I let them go through and stay on their bumper, because they usually can't keep the car on the track for more than a lap anyway.
