You will end up having two accounts, unless you use the same email. Its best to just go through the iRacing site and renew your subscription. It will be a more easily process.
Now if you didnt buy any tracks or cars from your original subscription, then you could set it up through Steam and start over. Its really on what you will gain or lose. In the end, it is always easier to do it through their website than through Steam.
I did have some purchases and I don't really want to lose my stats.
I've had a iRcing subcription 7 years ago and today when I saw there's a racing games promotions on Steam, I thought just like SammyJeev so I've linked my iRacing and Steam accounts then bought a 1y subscription but when I start a game and log in with my iRacing account it says
"Cannot log in: Account is not active. It looks like you need to renew your iRacing.com membership before you can login."
then if I click drop down menu on the Sign in button and choose Authenticate with Steam, I get:
"Cannot log in: Authentication failrue."
I've send a support ticket to Steam because I didn't know what was going to happen when I buy subscription through Steam. There's a info on my iRacing account which says "Steam key. My steam key: claimed. You have already claimed your one-time Steam key. Your steam account and iRacing accounts are now linked."
I think there's a disinformation in this Steam's offer. It should be clearly stated how it works if someone already has an iRacing inactive or active account.
I spent almost 210$ from 2010 to 2015 on iRacing and after all those years I wanted to get back to the game with all the content I have but I can't do it through Steam, they force me to do it directly from iRacing? Damn...
"We just wanted to remind everyone that if you purchased your iRacing account directly from iRacing (www.iracing.com), you HAVE TO renew through iRacing (and not through Steam or use your Steam Wallet).
Conversely, if you purchased iRacing through Steam, than all purchases, including renewals, must be done through Steam.
This is because iRacing and Steam have two completely separate purchasing processes.
When you purchase iRacing directly through iRacing, then iRacing is the official vendor of record for that iRacing account.
When you purchase iRacing from Steam, then Steam is the official vendor of record for that iRacing account.
If you purchased iRacing directly from iRacing, even if you have linked this iRacing account to your Steam account, you CAN NOT renew it through Steam.
If you tried to renew an iRacing account (that was purchased directly through iRacing) through Steam, you will need to contact Steam Support. https://help.steampowered.com/"
