- Trading Paints is custom paint jobs, you can make your own or browse the thousands of paints available. You can pay for it, but there's no need to, you can use it all for free.
- Kapps/Kutu Apps is made by kutu182 on Twitch, Kutu Apps is the old version that's free, with separate programs, Kapps is all-in-one, and you subscribe to use it. Does feature a Trading Paints syncing program, fuel calculator, and many things that are helpful for streamers.
- iRPitCrew is great for pitstops, it takes care of fuel, tyres, windscreen tearoffs etc. and is free, but hard to find and I think no longer supported by the creator.
- Joel's Real Timing (JRT) is similar to iRPitCrew in that it does fuel calculations, but it also offers a much wider suite of features, much like Kapps. Costs something like 15 Euros.
- SoundShift is good if you want to know the optimal shift points, but it's quite intrusive (It's bloody annoying
- Crew Chief is another thing that covers a wide range of things, namely pitstops, and providing a different spotter (calling car left, car right etc.)
There are loads more out there, you just have to browse the iRacing forums to find all sorts of things. That's probably the much better place to ask questions as well, the iRacing community is very helpful, whereas here it's open to all sorts of people, you just need to read some of the other threads on here to see the problems with it being open...
Other than the 'skill' to 'drive' a sim racing car, nothing is really needed to compete. However, a wheel with programmable buttons or a button box will give you more easily accessble options for things like clearing your visor, lights, canned voice comments in text chat, changing the 'black boxes' , etc. Othewise you'll be using your keyboard and thats not easily done when racing. CrewChief offers (among other things) voice commands which is great for VR or monitor use.
Trading Paints (free) adds the eyecandy of user created paint schemes for their car. Its a really nice program. There are free voice packs which add some flavor to the spotters if you choose not to use CrewChief or Digital Race Engineer (DRE). Like CrewChief, DRE also gives you voice commands, a spotter, and lots of information you can ask for via voice.
I concur with jameskingo in that the iRacing forums are a great place to get information. The caveat being you have to subscribe to iRacing to acess them.
Thanks for your reply!
Yeah, thanks for the tip. I should definitely get a button box (or make one). I got some buttons on my wheel, but not many. I have to say, I don't know what you mean with ''Black boxes"?
On the bright side, I got my License D after 4 races :)
On the not so bright side, my wheel broke :'(
