Its depends on what you wanne race. If you just want to race 1 car then its around 100$ for 1 season (12weeks). If you want to race Oval and Road and severell series and cars you can easily end up with 300-400$ for content.

In my first 2 years i maybe spend like 400$ or so. After 5 years i've spend around 700$ in total. From now on its only the member ship ~75$ a year on black friday plus maybe every 3 month a new car or track if i really want them.

Remember that this is an upfront cost for like 6 tracks and a car or two, which you can use from there for any further seasons.

If you don't want to start with winning entire series, where you would need the complete collection of tracks, you could also begin by just buying 4 of the most common tracks and 2 cars from the most populated series (you get a 15% discount for buying 6 or more pieces at once).

Most frequently used tracks:
- Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps
- Watkins Glen International
- Autodromo Nazionale Monza
- Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace
- Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari
- Road America

As for the cars, a Skippy for example will carry you through class D and from there a Mercedes AMG GT3 through C & B.

Like honestly I still mostly race the skippy, though I dab in other series. I enjoy all racing and all racing games, so I have bought all the content just to support the iRacing development, which so far has proven itself a good strategy given their latest features and content updates.

However, you can easily get away with buying like a single car from a series or not even buying into most series and just get away with mostly tracks and not spend a lot. Plus, you can also get participation trophies. Usually each season users come out with seasonal "what to buy" guides too.

Ultimately, if you wanted to do like... Skip Barber, it would be:

Car - SBRS
Sebring
Imola
Road America
Interlagos
Twin Ring Motegi
Bathurst
Suzuka
Charlotte Motor Speedway
Watkins Glen
Barber
Monza

at 6 pieces of content you'd get a 15% discount from the total. But you don't have to buy all of those either.

CMS is free (afaik) and you only have to participate in 8 races to get participation credits. In this case there are only 6 races left so it wouldn't matter (so I'd wait til next season if you wanna work on getting as much for as little as possible.

But in this case the last 6 races are

Bathurst
Suzuka
CMS (free)
The Glen
Barber
Monza

So if you just wanted to participate in the rest of the season and grab some relatively popular tracks, you could buy the car and 5 tracks to get a 15% discount and it's more than likely this series will use those tracks again sometime this year.

I'll use the high price of tracks since I'm sure most of them cost this much:

14.95*5 (tracks) + 12 (SBRS) = $86.75 *.85 (15%) = 73.73 plus applicable taxes

Now mind that you'd keep those of course, and usually they tend to provide updates for track owners when they release (and cars usually get a free replacement if purchased within 2 years of the update), as well as the fact that once you get started you can get up to $40 in participation credits per year.

And it does cost quite a bit for them to build the cars and tracks. And tracks, of course, can be used between series.

Overall... I think the price matches the product we receive. Others would disagree (with my opinion being that they usually have really small problems that they cherry pick individually from sims that do that one little thing slightly better without looking at the whole picture) but yeah.

Small price breakdown. Honestly... I could still easily spend that on 3 go kart sessions and a "license" at a nearby indoor karting place for roughly 24 minutes of racing total
