Steam or direct

Couple questions before I get into this.

1. New to Iracing - better to buy on Steam or direcr? Pro/cons?
2. Community still active enough for new guys?
3. They updating technology and graphics etc as it comes?

1. In the long run, there are better deals if you subscribe directly on iRacing.com. You can still link your iRacing to Steam even if you get it on their web site.

2. The forums on the Iracing web site are pretty active. Most are willing to help new drivers.

3. They are currently on DX11 for graphics. IR releases updates every three months or so (in between seasons)

Glad you're coming onboard. The community is very active/healthy. Whether you like ovals or road courses, there's always a race going on somewhere. The devs are very involved in offering new and updated content. Dirt tracks and cars, for instance, are the next thing on the horizon, I'm thinking this spring.
I would join through the iRacing website and just link your iRacing account to Steam in the Steam interface. That's what I did. It keeps up with your hours played.
Keep in mind, this is a true sim... nothing at all "arcade" about it.

I wish I went direct but got it through Steam last night and It will not open today. Any ideas?

Just remember, you are always racing against real people and they don't take kindly to people who "try" to wreck or retaliate against other players. Accidents happen as in real life and are not punished, but we try to keep the riff-raf out.

Agreed. I am a mature 50 yr old gamer that gets it. I have read all the beginer docs, rules of conduct and have been just practicing on my own for now. I undertsand the rating system and the idea of the game. But thanks for the heads up. I am sure I will make mistakes and whipe out some.

Sounds like you are gonna have a good time and have the right attitude. Your fist goal is to get out of rookies. Do not worry about "racing" people in rookie class. Concentrate on getting through a race without accidents. It may be good to even start the race from the pits. Just let the timer go to zero and do not hit the "join" button and it will put you in the pits and after the race starts you can come out at the back of the field and watch the carnage and practice wreck avoidance. If you can make ten laps without an off track, go ahead and jump into the practice rooms with other people. Use the "popular races" tab and not the goofy "Race Guide" page. That page is confusing as heck and no good as far as I'm concerned. Welcome aboard.

Best price I have seen for subscription is through Steam ...
(around 24 euros for one year)

Through Steam the installation is heavier as ALL tracks and cars are installed even if you dont own them.
Moreover it seems that updates are made twice : through Steam and then again when you enter iRacing ...

Go direct. I have yet to get it to run from Steam. I can load the UI but when I click "Join" it sits at 15% then says it can't load and won't go any further. At least direct works, not sure why it's even on Steam as you still need a subscription

Depends on the country. For example in my country Turkey, the annual plan is 8$ but if I wanna buy it directly it's 110$.
