iRacing
Canadian new members buy on Steam
I've been an iracing member since 2011 but let my subscription run out last yr as I just wasn't using it enough to justify the costs.
I convinced myself to give it another try today and hit the purchase button in steam but cant purchase anything in checkout
In steam it gives me an option of 1 month @ $12.99 cdn, 6 months @$10.16/month cdn -22% or 12 months @ $9.15/month
so I selected the 1 month option and proceeded to check out and got this notice.

You already own this game
CDN$ 10.99 at checkout, auto-renewed every 1 month(s) at CDN$ 12.99.

CDN$ 10.99
Subtotal

Your account already owns some of the above items, so you can’t purchase them again. You can purchase these items as a gift or adjust the contents of your cart to continue.

"iRacing - 1 Month Membership" can only be purchased for your own account at this time.

I am unable to select any option to continue the purchase for myself, can you not renew through steam or is this just another new member promo?
The main decision for renewing through steam was due to the fact it was in canadian dollars and slightly cheaper.......if I'm forced to renew through iracing website the cost is $13 usd a month which equals $17.10 cdn a month

Cheers

Got my answer from iracing support this morning.
Note to any Canadians thinking of purchasing iracing....buy it on steam and NOT on the iracing site, steam is in cdn funds and $4 cheaper a month and offers upto -29% on renewals. The iracing website is in USD and with the old black friday deal of 50% being lowered to only 25% you will save enough money to put back into content :)

David
If you initially purchased iRacing through the iRacing website, all purchases, including renewals, must also be done through iRacing (and not through Steam).

We do have the ability to add your existing iRacing account with your Steam account but if you initially purchased iRacing directly through the iRacing website, all purchases must also be done this way. You can not purchase anything iRacing related via Steam. The only way this can be done is if you purchase a new iRacing account through Steam but you would lose any of the cars and tracks you've purchased on this iRacing account as well as all results.

Its a shame, i was ready to renew but ill pass as i am not gonna pay usd to rent content/services.

Steam 1yr subscription $82.99 cdn
Iracing.com 1 yr subscription $110.99 usd = $146.46 cdn
a difference of $63.47 cdn
Black friday sale 25% off =$83.25 usd = $109.86 cdn
a difference of $26.87 cdn
iracing.com has a 40% off yearly subscription promo for new members which is $66.60 usd =$87.75 cdn which is $4.75 more with conversion

How do you arrive at the Steam one year subscription price of $82.99 cdn? You stated above Steam offers 12 months @ $9.15/month, which is $109.80... what am I missing?
I always giggle whenever people say "rent content" like the legal terms of Steam don't basically say that.

That's how EULA's have always essentially worked. You own the cars in iRacing as much as you own any digital copy of any game. The only thing you're really "renting" is the access to their servers. :)
@wilbumator my understanding is a discount is added when you purchase a subscription on steam so if i buy 1 month it will be discounted $10.99 at checkout renewed monthly at $12.99.
A one yr without discount is $9.15 a month renewed at $109.99 current price at checout with discount is $82.99.....long story short its much cheaper to purchase on Steam for canadians than on iracing.com
here's some screens of the steam checkout

That may be true. I'm a long term user of iRacing, so I buy 2 years at a time when the offer their bi-yearly deal. This year they reduced the price break from 50% off to 25% off, so $150 for 2 years instead of $100 for 2years. But because I'm already a member, I saw and jumped on their simultaneous website offer to buy $100 of iRacing credits for $75, and then using those to buy my renewal, lowering the cost to $62.50 a year for 2 years. I could have gotten $200 of credits for $150, purchased my renewal with 150 of those credits and having $50 in credits leftover. Effectively this makes it $50 per year for 2 years, and allows you another $50 to buy content, or rent servers for hosted sessions, or renew next time. I'm pretty sure this beats any Steam deal, in Canada or out, although I understand why casual users or new players who aren't sure what they're getting into would not want to make this commitment.
What's weird is that people state that they are doing this just to make money, when in reality they just pay somewhat well to get some pretty damn good employees (Like their sound engineer literally did the sound for every sim ever and they hired him full time), and I'm pretty sure it's just to make sure they have positive cash flow to do more things in the future.

>~> Cause if no one remembers, they had Papyrus go bankrupt back after they lost their NASCAR License.

I doubt they want to repeat that.

Just commenting on that last part about the commitment.

I totally understand. I just think sometimes people don't look at larger picture stuff. :(

Can you buy iracing dollars without having a current subscription?
Even with the $100 for $75 usd converted to cdn is $98.20 so the current steam pricing for a yr subscription is still $16 cheaper, plus I still need $11 usd to cover the remainder of the $110 yearly subscription bring the total to $30 cdn
No matter how you look at it the $62 yearly difference between steams cdn pricing and iracing.com usd$ is alot
Needless to say I am still puzzzled that they dont have the programming/tech to allow those that originally purchased on iracing.com to renew through steam?
Knowing there is a much cheaper alternative, just to be told I would have to open a new account and would lose all my content (I own 98% of all the road content.....wouldnt lose in theory, i would just have to pay much more to use it) is what i am really ticked about.

No, you can't. You would already have to be a member to even be aware on the deal on the website. That's what I was trying to say... if you knew you were going to stay on iRacing long term, if you knew you liked it already, you could join short-term and wait for the specials to come along and buy bulk membership. I realize this is not for the casual user. But if you did as I said, and bought the $200 iRacing bucks for $150 US, then used these discounted credits to buy a 2 year membership at the Black Friday discount price, you get the membership for a final price of $50 US per year, which I think is less than $65 CDN, and you have $50 in iRacing bucks leftover in your account to use as you wish.

Twice yearly they offer the subcription discounts, before Christmas and June or July. At random intervals, they also offer discounts on iRacing credits. I've been a member since 2010, and have most of the content. I watch for these deals and jump on them. They can indeed be combined to maximize savings. I'm not saying you should do this, just that it is possible. I understand your issue and feel for your plight, it sucks to have your content "trapped" like that.
