Possible Fix for Laptop/Optimus Users[Updated#7] - Video Provided

people who don't get the option to select nvidia gpu as second display will not work, sorry, I have not found a way around this.

EDIT6: When you launch DR3 from desktop 2, try not to alt-tab just to try and get the cursor out of DR3 window on desktop 1. Wait a bit longer than 10-15 seconds, wait a bit and see if the cursor can move to deskop 2 without alt-tab. I believe alt-tabbing while DR3 is loading into the splash screen logo is the cause for it to run in windowed mode(Not fully tested).
EDIT5: Turns out Win7/8 does not matter in the method I use, perhaps just the settings installed from vendor of laptop that doesn't allow one to select the nvidia gpu in screen resolution.
EDIT4: It would help I mentioned I'm using driver 337.88, might update to 340.52 to see if it will crash

EDIT: Tried a couple more times and they all got past the logo screen into the main menu, also changed my instructions as I found out more about the process.

Perhaps I got lucky and the game did not bug out while trying to figure out to use intel gpu or my nvidia gpu, but below was what I did to get the game to open(no crash so far!)

Begin with opening Nvidia control panel. In the "Manage 3D settings" tab, go to program settings and click add.
Navigate to your Steam installation path, and go to \steamapps\common\deadrising3 and choose the deadrising3.exe file. Force it to use your Nvidia card.
After you have applied the settings, go to your desktop.

Right click and select screen resolution. In this window you should click detect. If you can see two displays that are grayed out and named after your video cards, you're probably good to go.
Choose your Nvidia card and select "Attempt to connect anyway on (VGA in my case)". Don't remember which drop down menu it is, just fool around a little. When you found it, click apply.
Then, choose extended desktop and apply again. This will force-activate your discrete GPU.
Now the fun starts.

What I did after the quoted part.....

Remember 'Windows +P' command

Press and Windows key and the P key to bring up the monitor select screen. You won't see it but it will be active. Then press the down arrow key once and hit enter. If it doesn't switch to the original desktop the first time try the whole procedure again.

1.When you extend the displays, the desktop 1 should be your main, make a folder with control panel shortcut and DR3 Shortcut inside it. Copy the folder, drag the folder to the right off-screen(into the extended screen), set desktop 2 as your main display, now the folder should be there.

2. Launch the game, wait around 20-30 seconds, press windows+p several times until you are back at desktop 1(start menu bar should be there), reset resolution as necessary. Open the game. MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE YOUR DESKTOP RESOLUTION back to NATIVE once you do this

NOTE: next time you want to repeat the process, just press until windows+p to get into extended mode and click on the DR3 shortcut. After the patch comes out, use the control panel shortcut to set desktop 1 as main display again.


I have not tested this a second time yet, I was able to loading into the game without crashing or freezing. So far no crash since I launched the game this way 4-5 hours ago. Hopefully, it will work for you, let me know if it works for you.

This works! I have an optimus laptop, I set the 3rd display as the main display then launch game wait a few seconds then press windows key + p then press down arrow then enter will select 2nd display as main display. Only problem, game is now in a window and not full screen and Alt+enter does'nt fullscreen.

EDIT: Now it works, even with the newest nvidia-driver thanks to the video.
