Audio crackling

So for some reason the audio (dialogue and sound effects) seems to crackle a lot when characters are speaking, especially earlier on in the game.

This has happened to my wife (who's much further along in the game than I am) and me, although I've just started the game today. I'm on the space station and when someone speaks, there's a lot of crackling that's really annoying. Crackling is also present for the general "hum" of the space station itself.

Oddly enough, in the intro scene aboard the shuttle between Jara and that other crew member, there's no crackling at all nor was there any crackling during the intro's narration.
