Tyrant. Coloured it pitch black with red stripes on it.

I might have to change that name, though, considering it's now a waterproof piece of cardboard that gets reaper holes punched in it all the damn time.

Discovery 1, after 2001 A Space Odissey. The Seamoth, of course, is the C-Pod :steamhappy:

♥♥♥♥...

any sub that comes out standard without sonar is pre-WW2 ♥♥♥♥!!! It hasn't even got a depth sounder!!!
I don't know that these devs have been in a bath tub let alone the ocean. I doubt if they even did a google search on the subject "submarine".
Sonar as an upgrade!!!!! Devs whatever you're smoking how about sharing some. Must be potent. :)

But seriously, it's not only ridiculous but it's also very dump.

It is a good game mechanic. It makes sure you don't have a submarine that can do everything right away. Sonar is a feature you don't need but could definately use so it makes sense for the player to do something extra to get it. Whether you enjoy doing that something extra or not will depend on who is playing but it isn't an all-around unappealing idea merely because it makes you do something extra.

In-game, confining a submarine's features like sonar, shielding and hull reinforcement rather than including it in standard submarine design is a great way to enhance the customization of a submarine. If, say, you wanted to upgrade a feature or replace it with another feature, you would not need to take it out of the submarine itself - which would take more time and effort and would require you to deconstruct some part of the submarine in the process. Instead, you can just take out a single module and do whatever you want with that feature from there. You can also customize a standard-built submarine in any way you want with any feature you want, whenever you want to.

So, for instance, if you wanted a bunch of features for your submarine that are more specialized for shallow water, you could put the modules with those features in while you are in shallow water and then take them out and replace them with other modules when you move into deeper water. Hull reinforcement is useless in shallow water and while you are close to the surface so all you need to do is take a single module out and replace it with a module that does something like collecting solar power.

The Cyclops already has a feature included in its standard design that warns you whenever you are about to hit something and it has another feature that tells you when hostile creatures are near so the sonar feature that the sonar module gives you will not always be necessary. Simplicity is always better when you can help it so rather than making the Cyclops helm HUD more complex than it needs to be all the time it is a better idea to make the sonar feature optional. Even better, you can add something to the helm HUD that is more relevent to what you are doing at that moment if you restrict the sonar feature to a module, all the while keeping the helm HUD only as complex as it needs to be at any given time.

EDIT: Resolved quoting issue.
