Light Air Tanks vs HIgh Capacity Air tanks?
I know High Capacity Air tanks doubles your air reserves, but what do Light Air Tanks do? They don't get smaller, and there isn't any 'weight' thing...

Tanks slow you down. Light tanks slow you down less. High capacity tanks are glitched right now and don't slow you down at all but I imagine they'll fix that in the next update.

SCIENCE! (see "tanks" results halfway down)

SeaGlide with no fins: 0:41
SeaGlide with Ultraglide fins: 0:42

Thoughts: the Ultraglide fins are clearly better than normal fins. The surprise was the charged fins. I'd expected them to be at least as good as the normal fins, but they were as good as no fins (I think they should be changed to be as fast as regular fins). I didn't know what to expect from the SeaGlide with different fins, I guess it makes sense that equipped fins don't seem to have any effect.

Next I thought I'd test tanks. I substituted the 3 normal tanks for 3 plasteel tanks and got the following results:

No fins: 1:17/1:18
Normal fins: 1:06
Ultraglide: 0:57
SeaGlide (no fins): 0:41

With 3 High Capacity Tanks instead of normal tanks:

No fins: 1:09/1:09
Normal fins: 1:00
Ultraglide fins: 0:52
SeaGlide (no fins): 0:41

Thoughts: I expected a better time with the plasteel tanks Compared to the regular tanks I expected the same or worse with the high capacity tanks. But that's not currently the case in the stable build. High capacity tanks offer all the advantages and no disadvantages. The plasteel tanks ought to be either faster, or take up less inventory space, or both.

The data above is from the current stable version, 19974-Jun 15. I expect HC tanks to eventually slow you down compared to regular and plasteel tanks.

Update for Dec-2015 build

1) normal and HC tanks seem to have a noticeable speed impact when adding 4th+ tank to your inventory. So, generally keep 3 max.

2) Plasteel tanks don't make you faster, just don't impact speed as much. But, since they suck up 4x4 slots and only give 30 secs air, they're not worth it. If they sucked up 2x1 slots each, they could be worth it. But they don't.

3) Charge Fins seem to go slower when charging items, and go a tad faster then normal fins when not charging something.

4) Ultra-glide fins make seaglide worthless, since ultra-glides fit into paper-doll slot, while seaglide eats 5x5 inventory, uses batteries, and barely goes faster then the ultraglides.

5) You swim faster on the surface of the water, about the speed of the seaglide, even if you just have fins on. Not sure if this is a bug, but if keep your "swim up" key pressed while swimming forward you can move quickly on the surface while scanning below you or going to where you need to go.

I've found 3 HC tanks + ultraglides to be a good loadout. I keep charge fins at base, seamoth and sub to swap out when I need to recharge stuff.

Even with hardcore mode I never used more than 1 HC tank. The rest is done by subs and bases as backup.

What puzzles me most is why they dropped the equip slot for tanks and replaced them with gloves. These gloves are probably the most unused feature of the game!

A 4 slot tank interface backpack instead 1 for rad only gloves would be much better. And would keep inventory more sorted.

If your correctly using your cyclops/powerglide you should never need light tanks. Double the H2O is HUGE.

Nice. Thanks for the update.

The Numbers: ( correct to +/- 0,2 )

  • NO FINS / Tool in Hand // Speed 4,8
  • NO FINS / No Tool in Hand // Speed 5,8
  • NO FINS / at Surface // Speed 7,6
  • FINS / Tool in Hand // Speed 5,8
  • FINS / No Tool in Hand // Speed 6,8
  • FINS / at Surface // Speed 7,6
  • CHARGEFINS / Tool in Hand // Speed 4,8
  • CHARGEFINS / No Tool in Hand // Speed 5,8
  • CHARGEFINS / at Surface // Speed 7,6
  • ULTRAGLIDEFINS / Tool in Hand // Speed 6,8
  • ULTRAGLIDEFINS / No Tool in Hand // Speed 7,8
  • ULTRAGLIDEFINS / at Surface // Speed 7,6
  • SEAGLIDE / underwater going forward // Speed 9,5
  • POWERGLIDE / underwater going forward // Speed 23,1
  • SEAMOTH / underwater going forward // Speed 12,74
  • CYCLOPS / underwater going forward // Speed 7,39

Surface Speed independent of fins
Chargefins = No Fins
Tools in Hand take away 1,0 Speed
Seaglide vs Ultraglidefins // 9,5 vs 7,8
6 High Capacity Tanks maybe take away 0,2 or have no effect at all

i can confirm all these findings with my PlayerSpeed test.

1) i did only find a very minor effect that was almost not messureable -0,2 (6 High Cap. Tanks)
2) no noticeable speed change
3) Can not confirm this they act like no Fins
4) The Speeds are very similar the Seaglide is 0,7 faster
5) You swim at 7,6 Speed at the Surface no matter which fins
How did you measure the speeds? I had a hard time determining the PlayerSpeed because of fluctuating speeds with around +/- 0,2 around my measurepoint

The conclusions would be:

Swim at Surface to travel faster if you have (Fins,NoFins,ChargeFins)
Swim not at the Surface with Ultraglidefins.
Always put away your handheld tool if not needed.
Don't worry about Tanks impacting speed.
Do not build Plasteel Tanks always go for High Capacity Tanks.
A total of 3 High Capacity Tanks is a good choice.

Did you mean double the O2? If you breathed water (H2O), there "could" be a problem... :died: Of course, I just made a "Plasteel Tank" just to see if it made any difference in swim speed or inventory space. I guess that for now, it was just a slight waste of time and resources, but whatever... it's an EA game. I'm sure that the devs are gonna do something with this eventually.:happy:

The plasteel tanks should be twice as light and take up a 2x1 slot in inventory. Then there would be a point in making them. At the moment, high capacity tanks are just too good.

I think the charge fins should be as slow as no fins, it's the trade off for getting "free" power for your tools.

No, both are and should be a direct upgrade. Same as with knives.

Meh, I kind of like the challenge of the trade off, but that's me.

You're entitled to your opinion, and me to mine. I'm sorry if I made my comment sound harsh. But in reality: Is having bad fins the same as no fins? It would be cool if it slowed you down a bit, with the weight of the electronics and all.
