I've tested these things about several times against the normal fins and see no alteration in speed whatsoever.
I only tried them once but they were noticably faster for me.
with the Ultra Glide fins, you are just a tad faster than the Stalkers but not by much.
not enough for comfort, as they trail only a few feet behind you. lol :)
note that's its only with 2 air tanks.
next step i will try with the Plasteel tanks to see what speed increase i can get.
That's what I mean. The U.G. fins are only "a tad faster", but no enough to really count for much at all. They need have a truly noticeable difference in speed to that of the normal fins.
Plasteel tanks do not change the rate of speed.
but not fast enough to play in shark territories.
and since you're not fast enough to get out of their agro range they will folow you home.
i reloaded without saving because those 2 stalkers were in love with my Lifepod.
or the food inside. ;)
"The Plasteel Tank is a piece of equipment and an upgrade to the regular tank. It is crafted by using the Workbench.
Just like the regular tank, it boosts the player's oxygen supply by 30 seconds. However it has a lower weight than the regular version, thus increasing the player's swimming speed in comparison to the regular tank."

No fins equipped: 2:00
Normal fins: 1:32/1:33
Charged fins: 2:00/1:59
Ultraglide fins: 1:15/1:16
SeaGlide with no fins: 0:41
SeaGlide with Ultraglide fins: 0:42
Thoughts: the Ultraglide fins are clearly better than normal fins. The surprise was the charged fins. I'd expected them to be at least as good as the normal fins, but they were as good as no fins (I think they should be changed to be as fast as regular fins). I didn't know what to expect from the SeaGlide with different fins, I guess it makes sense that equipped fins don't seem to have any effect.
Next I thought I'd test tanks. I substituted the 3 normal tanks for 3 plasteel tanks and got the following results:
No fins: 1:17/1:18
Normal fins: 1:06
Ultraglide: 0:57
SeaGlide (no fins): 0:41
With 3 High Capacity Tanks instead of normal tanks:
No fins: 1:09/1:09
Normal fins: 1:00
Ultraglide fins: 0:52
SeaGlide (no fins): 0:41
Thoughts: I expected a better time with the plasteel tanks Compared to the regular tanks I expected the same or worse with the high capacity tanks. But that's not currently the case in the stable build. High capacity tanks offer all the advantages and no disadvantages. The plasteel tanks ought to be either faster, or take up less inventory space, or both.
i'm gonna craft a couple of Plasteel tanks and go race the sharks to see if it's better. ;)
tnx for the research Samaath.
perhaps you could contact the Devs with your findings?
And yet, that's what the Subnautica wiki claims is already implemented in the game. So the point that this hasn't actually been implemented is worth pointing out. According to my tests though, plasteel tanks actually do affect player speed, not just how you'd expect compared to high capacity tanks.
the UG fins do provide a sizable speed boost over the regular fins but the Plasteel tanks don't seem to do anything to speed atm.
the sharks trailed behind me at the same speed/distance as with the UG fins and regular tanks.
so it definetely need to be fixed.
i will report it ingame...
that's in the Experimental branch.
Nice science, Sarnaath.
