why are they removing the Terraformer
well as the title says, why they getting rid of it? i think it comes in very handy, unless the Exosuit will have a built in Terraformer or an upgrade for one.

The map is gonna be static, so it wont have any use anyway.

The devs removed all deformable terrain due to bloated savegame file sizes (they could grow to over 1 GB), and weren't able to fix it 'cause of limitiations with Subnautica's game engine (Unity). This was a problem on the console versions of the game for various reasons, and also prevented Steam's cloud from working with savegame files.

A shame - But if something really doesn't work 'cause of technical limitations, then you've gotta cut it.

oh so the ground will solid to save on game space, so it will run smoother in the future, i can see how that would be good, shame really, i enjoyed making my own islands.

One of the bigger reasons they're removing it is because people use it to break into cave systems without finding the actual entrance. Why bother finding the entrance when you can just terraform a hole straight down you know?

Yeah, basically it's just wildly impractical for their team size to try and get working.

They devs have also openly stated that they would have to cut Terraforming even if this was a PC exclusive. So "Because consoles" is only an additional reason tacked onto the end, rather than any signifigant reason.

Unity has a lot of...unfortunate limitations. Another unfortunate thing is that a lot of indy devs use it.

today i got my cyclops stuck in the sand could not move at all
only way i got out of that mess was using the terraformer

if not for that i would need to load a save

cyclops really does not fit the overall map size

if the map was x100 times bigger it would be amazing like riding a horse on witcher 3 across the map for hours

imagine exploring a wide ocean with a sub instead of a shallow sea and a void after 5 minutes to any direction

The way the development is going, primary usage of the Cyclops will esentially be to ferry your Exosuit around towards notable hotspot that are deeper than the Cyclops's max depth.

and it seems like the exosuit is not far way from being usable in the stable version, ive just scanned three suit fragments in the PRAWN room in the Aurora.

terraforming means the game has to remember every area you visit
the more you explore the bigger your save becomes (I have 3 now each 1Gb+)
slower loading times
lower framerate
the more you play the worse performance becomes because everytime it's more complicated (even if you take care crashfish still explode all the time and deform terrain)
if you drop something = loss of fps
etc..etc..

I loved the idea but I'm ok to sacrifice it for the benefit of the developers and the game, subnautica deserves more publicity than no man sky yet is far from it
also if it can bring the game back to the 120-140fps I experience in one of the patches I'm all for it (now i'm back to 50 which isnt bad but 120fps subnautica+ULMB monitor was real-life good looking)

Unity has nothing to do with the save system. Don't blame poor planning on save games on Unity... they could code literally any solution that would work in other engines in Unity.

Agree i like the thingi you can do great stuff with it but for better Performance i take it...

I mean you can still do great stuff but build a base on the island well thats difficult XD

True... but you can still "cheat"... you just get the repulsor gun and carry an oxygen-generating coral into the cave system with you. Haul it around as you explore. No threat of running out of air.

Even though its removed you can still use cheats to get it even though, devs removed it, heres a link for a walkthrough (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AukRIbmlpr4) how to get commands and after you watch that. type enter, and then type "item terraformer"
