No they removed this. It was a big source of graphics hitching and bloated save files.

They removed the digging but not the ability for ground to deform. So they have really not removed what causes the hitching and bloated saves. And those stil happen too.
I can still deform terrain with constructions and the cyclops. Which means terrain voxels and deformations stil are in the game. They just removed another tool for it.

They still need to remove dynamic terrain, I'm still able to dig and as Obraxis (if I recall correctly) said, the save files were big due to saving all the data of modified terrain. My save is now 1gb in size. As for the performance it does seem to be improved, but I still get some issues in some places related to pop-in and probably not only to that.
I personally think they removed terraforming too early, because they did not seriously addressed these performance issues in this patch. Therefore I don't know where did you got your info from.

They did remove the sand digging as the first step of removing the terraforming, since it was too easy to do accidentally. It's not the final solution.

They still need to remove dynamic terrain
Allready mentioned that in my post. I can also stil change terrain by explosions, cyclops colissions and constructed habitat buildings

And Seamoth collisions. Your post wasn't there when I was posting mine. :)

Which seems to be a very illogical decision, because they did not addressed performance issues and still removed the toy with which some players had fun.

The toy's still there, you just need to build the terraformer tool first.

Well this is stupid. Now it lost some of the good feeling :/. And the possibility to hide yourself inside a hole when some criter is getting closer.

Eh, the dig console command is a bit iffy as to if it still works these days. Best bet these days is to warpforward into the ground and drive it back out.

The terraformer itself can, I believe, still be gotten with the right console command. No idea if it still works though.

You can still use the Terraformer in the current version of the game. Enable the console and type 'spawn terraformer.' I'm not sure if the functionality has been disabled in one of the recent patches, but it did work at launch.
