Reaper Levianthans becoming more sneaky?
I'm glad I lived to tell the tale:

I was on my last battery for the Sea Glide, so I decided it would be a good idea to finally drop all the junk I collected and catch some dinner. I oriented myself on the rescue pod beacon, which I built my base under, and begun swimming. When I surfaced for air, I found it peculiar that I was moving AWAY from the Aurora, instead of towards it.

"Must've remembered wrong," I thought to myself, since these things happened in the disorienting depths. As I zoomed along, the situation became more and more suspicious to me - a heat singature signal that accompanied me on my hud from the very start was reading over 1100m, instead of the 600 or so I managed to remember while painstakingly building my little base.

"Must've... remembered wroooong?" I thought to myself again, reluctantly looking around the clearly unfamiliar terrain. I built my base on a cliff - yet the closer I got, the more darker it got, the bottom a distant memory about 200m ago.

Finally, I saw the pod. The brief moment of confusion got swept away by a wave of panic as I heard the one sound I hoped to never hear again - the echoing howl of a Reaper. It was right there, a hundred or so meters below the pod. I'm not sure. I never swam so fast in my life, as far away as I could. I swear I heard the howling follow me all the way to the Shallows, where I crammed myself into a cave and slipped into a panic induced coma.

Story based on real events. Be warned.

Near the Aurora I've been chased by a Reaper at night !

Now night became more dangerous as predators are more active.
You do know the life pod can float away, or the reaper can push it. But anyway i have i 12 dead reapers around my base.

It kept position for nearly an in-game week, and floated away in less than an in-game day. And there was a Reaper below it. He tried to bait me T_T
I had to go to the aurora on foot, er, flipper I mean, having 3/4 of every fragment, was tired of being slowed dpown by the rad suit so I thought screw it, just grab a few signals, batteries and power cells while fixing the Aurora's radiation leaks, enroute I saw a reaper and some lithium, dive for the lith and get back on the hilly path to Aurora and just happened to turn around and see the reapers face an inch from me, but he turned away, and he didn't make a sound.
This is an awesome story and mirrors some of the best random experiences the game has to offer.
Also got cornered by another one in what I called the Big Nothing, just sand and emptiness, like in Mad Max, but underwater, anyway, reapers coming for me, only to have it dive straight down and inhale a sandshark. thats two uses for sandsharks now, biter clearance and reaper decoy-age.
think about it, you could write YEARS worth of books about your expeiriences in the deep lol
Well, I enslaved a bunch of reapers, so I got over my fear, recently I built a gladiator style arena, fun fact: reapers cower in the face of the sea dragon
something really similar has happened to me actually. i made a base right underneath the escape pod as you did.

i dont remember what exactly i was doing at the time like you, but basically i positioned myself torwards the pod's beacon when my inventory was full and was heading home when i noticed i didnt recogize anything around the area and the beacon was just farther and farther away.

i totally forgot to put a mobile beacon thing on the spot and was worried ide ♥♥♥♥♥♥ my game by doing so cause ide never find it (also still thought the game was procedurally generated at this point) sounds like i noticed a bit faster than you cause i never encountered the reaper, but you also said you found your pod, which i did not.

anyway im 30 hours into my first playthrough now and still never attempted to find the pod...well i was way out by the edge of the map and the beacon to me looks WAYYYYYYYYYY beyond the edge of the map, it could just be a illusion of the depth, im gonna take a trip out soon/eventually see what came of that ♥♥♥♥

i thought it was a reaper that done it too lol

Escape pods tend to drift off like that (luckily for me I never encountered this problem). Apparently if the beacon is off the edge of the world, theres no seeing that escape pod again.
