Reproducing melons and potatoes?

I can't seem to reproduce them. I took 1 of each back to my base.

Then spent a long time trying to get stalkers to drop teeth so I could make the obervatory since I could not for the life of me fit an inside planter box in a cross section. Once I got the 3 enamled glass I figured out, totally by accident, that you can place the planter box in a cross section at an angle. I was pretty happy about that despite all my wasted time spent scrounging for teeth.

But then I plant my 1 potato and my 1 melon and both are ready to be picked almost instantly. I pick them and it gives me 1 of each... huh... so I search here and find I have to use my knife on them to get seeds to plant for what I want to do. But try as I might I can't get my knife to hit the melon while it's planted. And doing so on the potato simply destroyed it with no seeds in my inventory or on the floor of my base.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? How do we multiply melons and potato's?

plant the potato you pick from it, you don't have to cut the potato plant.

You have to cut the melon, you may have to be standing directly on it to do so. Otherwise it could be a glitch in your game.

Thank you herugrim. I did have to stand right on top to make it hit it and get seeds for the large melon. Now to swim back to the island and see if I can find another potato.

Just take two potatoes, put them in a box in a quiet corner of the base, dim the lights and put on some Barry White music.

When you come back there will be more potatoes.
