Need help using the interior growbed

So I put some plants in the growbed (Marblemelon + Chinese Potato) and they're not doing anything. At some point I was hoping more plants would spawn in the growbed, but every time I return to my base it's just the same two plants I put in there originally.

How am I supposed to farm anything if these plants don't produce more plants? Am I missing something?

Cut the plants with your knife for seeds.

When eating the potatos, if you don't pick the last one the rest will grow back on the plant over time. If you do pick the last one, you will need to replant one of them to get the plant back.

With mellons most people will grow them in groups of four. This lets them knife one, eat the other three and plant the four seeds they got from the one knifed.
