Entirely avoiding infection?
So, I'll probably get myself a copy of Subnautica in the next months, but I was just so hyped about it that I ended up spoiling myself the entire story. And there's something I've been thinking of: Can you survive on disinfected water and nutrient blocks(which shouldn't contain the virus) until you are given the rocket blueprints and so skip the last chunk of the game? Or maybe even disable the gun and then get the infection and leave the planet(like a bad ending)?

No, getting infected is unavoidable.

That's what I thought, but it would have been a fun lore-friendly easter egg/secret ending. Well, it still makes a great game I'm sure I'll enjoy. Thanks for the quick answer, anyways :)

People have discussed alternative outcomes for various events in the game, and it would be nice to see in the future for continuity's sake and multiple playthroughs (even if avoiding a certain event is kinda like cutting content out for yourself). Right now I don't think there is really any flexibility for the scripted events, which is not the same as saying the game is linear and on rails. My first playthrough, I actually never discovered one of the major biomes.

You get the virus from swimming. So it makes no difference how careful you are with your consumables.

The only way to avoid the infection is to die of dehydration in Lifepod 5 without ever cracking the seal.

The new "This question has been answered" check-mark and highlighted answer doesn't really seem to be working, does it. :steamfacepalm:

You cant clear the story even if you never get infected, you can try to "uninfect" yourself using console commands but you wont be able to turn off the gun, it will show you as infected.

The game has 5 stages of infection, 0 being yet to enter water and 5 being cured. You can only turn the gun off at stage 5

So many people said the correct thing before you. Why do you feel the need to say it anyway even though you're self-admittedly unsure about it yourself?

Im pretty sure the game infects you whenthe ship explodes. dont hold me to that tho

The player gets infected THE MOMENT YOU ENTER WATER.
The virus is everywhere, only reason life still exists on the planet is Peppers carry degraded enzymes which slows the rate of infection

Yeah, that makes sense. I (for some reason) thought the virus spread through the foodchain only, but it might as well spread through water.

The closest thing to avoiding infection is keeping your total infection level on the lower end, before you outright cure yourself.

Which is of course, the backwards logic method of Skipping the Disease research facility. As that makes it worse due to canned triggers.
