my friend built rows in hers using large lockers back to back in the middle of the room

that would be two multipurpose rooms connected with the cross. left and right points of the cross are for storage. put the hatch on the top or bottom of that cross.
As well, take advantage of VERTCIAL MP rooms for mass storage. base ladders are instant travel. Beats sprinting through hallway tubes to get to the next room.

I could reach the bottom of that base from the top floor in the time it takes to walk to the next room in a horizontal setup. Use horizontal setups for style preferences, as they will only slow you down if your main concern is "optimized storage"
Then have lockers lining the walls for less common things.
The one thing that I hate about lining walls is:
1. Can't branch out.
2. Can't put reinforcements up.
3. Can't put windows up.

The wall lockers are labelled clockwise from the fabricator:
- Copper
- Gold
- Silver
- Lead
- Lithium
- Magnetite
- Uraninite
- Nicklel
- Kyanite
- Energy
- Electrical
- Health
- Chem
- Rubber/Lub
- Fibers
- Glass
- Mushrooms
- Gel Sacks
- Stalker Teeth
- Table Coral
- Crystaline Sulphur
- Salt/Cave Sulphur
- Ruby
- Diamond
- Quartz
The number of wall lockers isn't due to the amount of storage needed, but rather organization. Almost every crafting item has a labelled locker and there's an attempt at logic behind the order. If you stand at the fabricator, metals are to your right in order of decreasing degree of use. To the left, first crystals and then organics in order of decreasing use. Manufactured goods end up being at the back. The floor lockers mainly store titanium, but also misc manufactured goods and the items that take up 4 slots (tanks, suits, plants, collectibles, etc).
