If anything putting all the monster spawns in the void just attracts more scrutiny to the fact the map is fairly small. Rather than less.
If it was simply empty people would take one trip, get bored, come back and forget about the void. But increasing the aggro conga in the void yet again, means an increase in getting honest questions like yours asking what the point of so many monsters is.
Also, not seen more than three of the giant ghost worms at once yet.
It would be good if there was some lore as to why these giant dudes prowl just off the relative 'shallows' of the normal map.

Kind of like I used to do in the original Far Cry, MUST be a reason attack helicopters pounce the way they do? Eventually I realised this was a clever Dev way to make the world seem real and yet keep the player in the game proper so to speak. I for one like it and am glad this idea FINALLY got implemented.
