Crashfish are plentiful also. Keep looking.
They make specific vocalizations - one generic, one for chasing a food fish and one *when they see you and target you for attack*.
You can swim around them all day totally safely if you listen for the audio cues telling you when you need to swim away.
If you want to watch a few seconds of this - at about 1:30 I end up swimming playfully with 3 stalkers as I explain something about Creepvines. One tags me after I lose sight of him in a cluster of vines but only hits for minor damage.

If you've got more of the same fish in your inventory, you will instantly equip the next one and can keep on feeding.
