Extinction Avoid achievement

Okay so i have a repair tool but no laser cutter or propulsion cannon, so basically i cant't enter Aurora to repair the engines. And PDA just told me i have <24hrs to fix it before effects to ecosystem.

Obviously i can't repair it by then, so my question is: Is this achievement a time-based event where if i dont have it fixed before the next explosion, then i wont get achievement? Like could i still get this AFTER exploding?

Also, just curious the effects to eco system will basically remove my food/water supply, so after repairing will all lifeforms return to its habitats?

Take your time, you should get the achievement once you finish the repairs you need to do, it doesn't actually affect you, just a prod from the narrative side to get you to stop admiring the view and start following the story.

Actually, with some clever jumping, you can indeed get to the engine room without the laser cutter or propulsion cannon.

So i can repair it whenever i want and still get the achievement? Sweet cause food/water supplies will slow me down, especially with no more food due to upcoming explosion

All you need is the repair tool, jump over the boxes. If you have ever jumped in any other video game its the same mechanic.
Run off the long peice of steel and land on the large box then jump to the smaller boxes and your in.
You need the laser cutter to get to the PRAWN room

Time doesn't matter.. radiation doesn't effect anything other than how close you can get to the Aurora without a Rad suit.

True dat. In the timespan between when I got that message about the radiation irreversibly affecting the ecosystem in less than 24 hrs, and when I actually REPAIRED the engines on the Aurora, I must have spent about two weeks just gathering supplies, building my base, and making new gear.

The only actual effect you'll see is that the longer you wait to stop the radiation leaks, the longer it will take for the radiation to disappear after you finish the repairs.

If you repair it right away (very soon after the explosion) the radiation will disappear in about a day. If you wait longer, it can take up to 3.4 in-game days to disappear.
