What steps to take next

Spoilers, so beware.

I have found the alien building and know that I have to deactivate the laser before I can even hope to get off the planet and that I can't do that yet because I am infected.

So, can anyone give me a few helpful steps? I know I need to start building vessels to go farther, faster and deeper but I'm not certain where to find the parts. Maybe the top 5 things you would do next. Also, I haven't even found one part of the laser cutter. Really, any ideas?

and your pod is where? Just look around, you should be able to find a red grass area near your pod. Just go look for a wreck and search inside.

The location of your pod is semi-random. While it will always start in the shallows it will not always start in the same place, so giving directions from it doesn't really work.

Just look about and explore. Early game you can use the beacon from your lifepod and the wreck of the ship to guide you and keep an idea of where you are.

In the end if lost use this simple guide. Always try and go deeper. If you can't go deeper for any number of reasons, look in the places you can get to for anything that can help you go deeper.
Even if those places are out of the water itself.

Always explore, always scan everyting and if still lost your PDA has a codes and clues section.

Explore the Aurora (after you have a Laser Cutter).

Look at the Aurora and go in it's general direction, you will find the red grassy plains. Keep in mind that there are 2 of these grassy biomes in the entire map, so try not to confuse one for the other. After you have the Laser cutter, explore the Aurora. After you have explored the Aurora, make your way back to your pod, please be careful of Reapers that hang out around the Aurora. Then try to build the 3 vehicles in the game, Seamoth, PRAWN, and Cyclops. As for the parts, the easiest to obtain is the Prawn Suit. Seamoth parts can be found in the Red Grassy Areas, Prawn Suit can be found inside the Aurora, and all 4 Parts you need to get the blueprint, and Cyclops is the hardest because you need 3 blueprints to even create it. Hull, Bridge, and Engine, for the locations, all of these parts can be found in the Mushroom Forest, which is also near the Aurora, and the area behind the Aurora. Going behind the Aurora is extremely dangerous, because there are 2 Reapers that dwell there.

You can explore without a laser cutter. You will need the repulsion cannon before the cutter on the Aurora.

Wait- do pods land in random locations? If so this explains a lot of my stalker base-humping issues...

Ahh, then I got the bottom o' the barrel spawn area. The RNG decided to throw me right on the edge of the kelp zone, so I had to spend my first hour in-game panicking to get the materials for a knife (and figuring out controls) before Stalkers dragged me off.

sent you a friend request. I finally built the vehicle bay and have a seamoth. I also have the components for the first depth increase but it looks like I have to build a modification station in order to add the depth increase. In order to do that, I am assuming I need to build a mulit-purpose room and put the mod station in it, correct?

Also, I have searched about a dozen wreckage sites and only found 1 fragment of the laser cutter. Found all kinds of other useful things like tables, chairs and vending machines. Also, getting a lot of repeat fragments (i.e. I have the beacon blueprint, but am still finging lots of beacon fragments). I am guessing the fragments are randomly generated along with the planet, so I will just have to keep searching.

Really getting into this and am excited about the apparent depth (pun intended) to this game!

If you really hate your spawn point you can use the console command "randomstart" to move the lifepod to a new random spawn location.

The Laser Cutter fragments can be very hard to see inside the small cargo boxes scattered around the starting areas. Make sure you check them all thoroughly - like get close enough to them for the Scannable Item icon to pop up, because if the light's bad, it could look like there's no fragment in there, but there may be.

I've never found anything in the little crates. Most of them don't even seem to be open. I will have to search them more thoroughly. You're not talking about the ones with the green light that you can open, I assume. Usually find batteries and health packs in those.
