Why bother with Disinfected Water?
Why bother making Disinfected Water? It's harder to make and doesn't seem to have any benefits. I thought it might be a prerequisite to getting rid of the "Infection" we seem to have from the beginning but I've been drinking nothing but disinfected water for ages and I'm still infected.

disinfected water is 12 oz, so you get more then with just with a normal bladder fish. also infection is just part of the story progression

If I drink bladder fish water, will I destroy whatever infection "progress" I've made? Salt is harder to come by and if it doesn't matter until the other pieces of the "infection puzzle" are in place, I'd just as soon drink bladder fish water until it's necessary to go clean.

It's for not having to rely on bladder fish to get water. Oh and disinfected water fills the meter more than filtered water.

you can over fish them and run out of bladder fish

it won't get rid of the infection at all. There is no "infection progress". Disinfected water simply refills more of your drinking meter.

Because salt gives more water this means you can spend less time looking for more to make more. Also if you overfish the bladderfish they will start to die out. Their rate of respawning is lower that the rate at which you will want to make use of them.

Salt itself is easier to find if you remember to keep expanding your search area and just keep an eye out for any bits when out and about.

As to your level of infection. If you're worred about any SPOILERS stop reading about....Now.

Your level of infection goes up as the story goes on and with the exception of the first level of it (which can also kick in if enough time passes before you find one of the following) will only go up when you find certain locations in the game related to said story.
It does not go up from what you may or not eat and/or drink. Though I can understand why you would have guessed it was like that.
If at any point you stop following the games story the progression of the virus stops right along with it.
It's a very polite deadly killer virus like that.

I used to think like that, but it's actually way more efficient. For a start, disinfected water restores 30 thirst to filtered's 20. The crafting recipe also makes 2 disinfected waters, meaning that you can turn a single piece of salt (And a tube coral sample, which is super easy to get) into 60 water. You need to catch 3 bladderfish (a non-sustainable resource, by the way) to get the same value as one piece of salt.

Salt isn't that hard to find if you know where to look. Both the Kelp Forest and Grassy Plateua biomes have abundant salt, and they're both easily within reach of your lifepod or base. Or, if you have the power generation to support it, you could simply make a water purifier, which generates salt and a large filtered water which restores 50 thirst.

You'll probably run out of bladder fish before you run out of salt if you insist on not exploring much beyond the Safe Shallows. If you do, you'll find other, better renewable water sources - but that's for later..

Its easier for me. I can just mine salt deposits and coral tubes which is much easier and more effective than catching bladder fish. If you carry a mass supply of coral tubes, salt is available in most biomes so free water pretty much every where.

That's what the alien containment tank is for:

The Alien Containment is a large, cylindrical aquarium which can be filled with Fauna that has been caught or hatched by the player. It is built using the Habitat Builder inside the Multipurpose Room. The blueprint can be retrieved via a data box.
If the player leaves two creatures of the same species inside the Alien Containment for long enough, they will breed and another fish of the same species will spawn inside. Edible Fauna, such as the Peeper, will reproduce approximately twice a day once mature. Once the Alien Containment reaches a population of ten fish, the reproductive process will stop. If more fish are added after the maximum is reached, some will die and float to the top of the container. Multiple Alien Containments stacked on top of each other will increase the amount by ten each.

quite easy to get and gives a lot of water
if you drill a deposit of salt you have water for days

Bladderfish = 20ml of Filtered Water

Bleach = 2x 30ml bottles, so 60ml of Disinfected Water.

In other words you get 3x the amount of drinkable water from Bleach vs. Bladderfish.

As others have mentioned, disinfected water gives 2x bottles of higher volume; so you get more net water per Bladderfish. Of course, the best methods to get water are the Stillsuit and the Desalination base structure. And Latern Fruit.
