It was a bit to powerful though. The devs tryed to balance it but could never seem to find that sweet spot between the two ends. In the end I think they might have given up as the seaglide works better anyway.
The only item in this game that I'm sure is a troll item is the alien rifle.
If you find/found it, you'll understand why.
The deeper you were, the faster you'd be going when you reached the surface. If you were deep enough when you started you could get a good 5 meters into the air on surfacing, allowing you to refill your O2 tanks while airborne, before tipping over and diving back in like a dolphin - such a blast!
Are you talking about the prop in the alien gun facility?
From my experience with it, it seems to have a momentum mechanic in place. The longer you rise with it, the faster it goes. This makes it ideal for (relatively) medium depth dives, between 100 and 300 meters. Once you get past 300 meter depths though, you’re better off having a powered vehicle to jump in to.
Edit: If you want a real troll item, look no further than the Pathfinder Tool. This item seems to have been a constant struggle to get to function correctly since EA. It’s better now than it used to be since the lights it shoots can’t clip through walls like cable it originally had could, but it still has a very limited utility.
There is one place that tool shines, cave systems to small to fit a seamoth.
Without that tool (and a fully upgraded airtank) I might have not made it back, alive, out of that giant tree with my fourth cuddlefish. That place was built to be a maze, no mistake.
In short, it is not needed but it can help with the first few deep dive.
It definitely saved my life several times when i was diving in cave systems, even in the safe shallows when I almost didn't give myself enough time. I also used it to escape stalkers and to let me explore the grassy plains, before I eventually found seaglide schematics.
It loses its usefulness as the game goes on, but definitely is nice to have.
PS
I also miss being able to launch myself from the water, the bladder was good for that, seaglide used to be too, but the devs seem to have nerfed it, most of the time I dont go shooting out any more. Still working in the Seamoth though, I've used it a bunch of times to do jumps over super shallow coral or rocks, simply because its kinda rad. One of these days I'm definitely going to accidentally beach myself ><
