You actually can't access neither the upgrades, nor the storage of the P.R.A.W.N Suit from the Moonpool, it is "intended".
I don't know what you're referring to when you say "it doesn't do anything": You can't stack depth modules : 2x Mk1 =/= 1x Mk2. You need to get a prawn depth module Mk2. (Also make sure it is meant for the PRAWN, as Seamoth and Cyclops modules are different).
Although MK1 module can get you to the thermal plant (the lava castle you're referring to).
To craft the MK1, you need the vehicle upgrade station, which is a module placed in the moonpool via the habitat builder.
The MK2 needs to be crafted on a modification station. I'll let you browse the wiki for further information concerning those modules.
P.S: please also note that the base depths are different per vehicle.
The base depth for the PRAWN Suit is 900m, which equals the Mk3 for the Seamoth, for example. Mk1 gets you to 1300m, and the Mk2 gets you to 1900m.
That part looks silly to me and I prefer to do it in the cyclops.
Sorry that I was unclear.

Really?!? Well bugger... that is what we were trying to do is go pas the 19k mark so that we can find the 'Lava Castle'.
We have been playing 'blind' for 95% of the game, so I finally had to break down and look where to find the schematic of the Ion Power Sorce was and all I could find was 'Lava Castle', but my Son and I love the Prawn, so we wanted to bring that with us.
Thanks for the help all!
