Saving and dying
Just a quick question about saves and death. If you die, will it autosave or will I retain my last save? Just wondering if I should exit before death to avoid overwriting saves or not.

Yes, it is save scumming but I have limited time and I prefer that to console commands to manage reaper deaths ;).

If you die you go right back to your lifepod. No auto save so if you exit without saving, the last time you save.

When you die, it doesn't go back to your last save, it takes you to the last "safe" spot you entered, whether a base, cyclops, or what have you.

Minus most if not all the resources you might have picked up since leaving the safe area.

So I can safely save before a "hotspot" and exit if I expect imminent death?

Thank you both for quick answers. I was worried that I had to start doing manual backups :D.

It's actually kind of weird if you ask me. Certain things seem to save like PDA's or Blueprints I picked up before dying.

But items are lost and even vehicles that I wasn't in at the time.

Remember to save. Don't ask for AutoSave it will save when you really don't want it to.

and you don't always go back to your lifepod, you go back to location of last save I believe.

Even better. Just to be clear. AutoSave is the last thing I want. I was afraid that I would end up in the lifepod after death and then it saved over my save. Thus ruining my save scumming :).

Blueprints was actually another Q. Did you say they are retained after death? I thought since they are not technically "items" after you memorize them.

Pretty sure I retained a blueprint after death, maybe it was a PDA message. Can't remember exactly but it surprised me it was still in my PDA after dying.

Sounds fair but one can not be sure of course. My plan is simple, save before entering Reaper spawn points and then use that as a retry point. I am too lazy to pick up stuff for my sub again.

I'm almost 100% sure blueprints and messages and whatnot are retained after death. Items not always.

I do not understand the save mechanics entirely.
Let's say I am out in the deep ocean, collecting ressources. After 3 quartz I save. Then I go on and after another 2 quartz, I get eaten by a reaper leviathan. I awake in the lifepod with all quartz gone. I exit without saving and reload.

Do I then have 3 quartz or nothing?

That was my original Q :). It seems it does not overwrite your save after respawn. Which means I can save just before entering the bad areas.

Ah, thank you. Then that's exactly what I will be doing as well. :)

Yes. That is correct.

Dave your game. Do something stupid. Reload the game as if it never happened.

Every time you enter your base or lifepod the game "saves" the contents of your inventory (but not your game) - I guess "remembers" the contents of your inventory is a better way to put it.

This is different from an actual manual save which saves everything including contents of inventory, position in world, health/food/water status etc.

So if you save, then pick some stuff up, then die and reload, it will load you back in without the new stuff you just picked up. If you save, pick stuff up, then enter a base or lifepod, THEN die, you will still have the new stuff you picked up when you respawn back at your lifepod/base - but loading your old save (from before you entered the lifepod/base) will revert you to the point before the game "remembered" your new inventory contents.
