I was trying pretty hard not to die in my original play through, I was very cautious of most things as for a long time, I didn't actually know what the penalty for dying was
I died once; it was a very cheap death, pretty sure it was bug related. I can't go into too much detail as it's a spoiler, somewhat close to the end of the game, but basically a creature 1 shot me, but the position I was in shouldn't have been possible.. you'll understand later when you come across a certain enemy :)
Yeah, achievements like finding all lifepods, getting all audio diaries, things like that, they just add more life and playtime to the game, more completionist type achievements would be ideal, in addition to the ones we currently have, which are story line related and which most people will pick up anyway by default.
Find all purple tablets... tough as nails :D
Randomize item locations..
Every scan gives points. The more dangerous, the higher. Even more so on hardcore.
Scanning completely every animal? +1000 (or whatever), Same with plants, samewith tech. So the progress within the game would be bound to every playthrough and not achieveing an outside-the-game achievement once ( like completionist). Im not against the achievements, i just want to have this also rewarded in every playthrough.
Also the storyteller AI form Rimworld might be fun, i.e. an extra element that can spawn additional events, depending on how you do. Adjustable for points, till becoming even ridiculously unfair.
I think some concepts like this would establish further replayability as a game mechanic.
After trying hardcore a few times, I ended up going with survival and just deleting the save if I died.
I tallied up the times my "hardcore" run would have been completely borked by the end of the run due to bugs. Seven times.
The game isn't even that buggy, it's just not hardcore level bug free.
Early reapers like that are actually one of the few threats, you definitely want one of them cheap titanium seamoths before venturing outside the shallows/kelp/red grass. Warpers are hardcore if you don't have a reinforced suit as well. Waaay down in lava level there's some nasty leviathans too.
I'm a sad panda.
What I did get though was arguably the most memorable gaming experience ever. Getting through this thing on the only life god gave you is a special thing, which has left me with personal moments of drama, luck and some clever workarounds to make it happen - everyone's story will be different and that's what makes this so great. The achievement isn't the end of the world, the satisfaction for doing this thing on hardcore is much better than that.....
But once that bug is fixed, a hardcore achievement would be cool. Maybe even a save the sunbeam achievement or a 'scan all life form' types achievement .
Or collect all model\posters achievement.
I love the game and I love the concept of hardcore run, especially if there is an achievement for it. It should be disabled though until all the problems are fixed.
But a friend of mine who has a computer much less powerful had a tons of annoying bugs, like passing through the floor, stuff like this.
Meanwhile in over 1700 hours of play I see the popins, which is adjustable if your system has the gpu power, and occasional microstutter. The other stuff? Nope. Ain't happnin.
The harsh truth is that if you want to play modern games, then you need hardware that can run them. This game rewards cpu and ram power.
A few examples:
- During loading of the game you hear that habitat runs on emergency power and then that the power was restored.
- If you turned off beacon for lifepod, it shows in a fixed place on the screen after saving and loading.
- It is very easy to lock the interface while crafting, probably in more than one way. It happens to me once per hour on average. I suppose all it takes is to right click at the wrong moment or open inventory or something like that.
- Power transmiters often don't connect or they connect in a different way after loading.
- I fell through textures once with PRAWN and moreover, there was no failsafe which would teleport me back up, which is quite common in other games.
- I saw a let's play where youtuber was constantly teleported out od Cyclops and the game didn't register this as entering water so he got fall damage every time. You won't tell me that people who life from playing games have cheap hardware.
There are much more bugs.
I wrote that this game has no testers because it doesn't have them. It there was a tester, they would find most of the obvious repetable bugs in one day.
This doesn't exactly fill me with hope for not encountering any glitch at a bad moment of my hardcore run.
