They have a pretty rare drop rate and if you saw them.... you'd know. Its egg is like 1/2 the size of seamoth, only ever saw them spawn in the red grass area that isnt near the aurora
Ugh thats annoying. They been in experimental for so long it blows my mind that they are in the stable yet.
I don't understand it either. I don't know if you still can, but you were able to spawn them with console commands. So if you have a save you don't mind cheating on you can spawn them in.
After reading this thread I set up my scanner room to search for creature eggs and found some 1x1 unidentified size eggs, with the same texture model as the Spadefish eggs (I have identified those). Hard to spot in the tall red grass so I highly recommend a scanner room to search.
However, after putting the egg in my containment, it didn't hatch. The egg is broken but so far no fish have appeared out of it. Can provide screenshots if you guys wish, will do more testing and keep you guys updated.
If its a reefback it has to be more than 1 containment stacked ontop for it to hatch.
Let me know!
I found 3 more eggs which I put in my containment. It's stacked 3 high by the way, so I doubt the egg didn't spawn anything because of the size. Currently I'm thinking that they are in the game, but because of their 1x1 size and not hatching anything, that their functionality hasn't been implemented yet.
Only thing I'm finding weird about this is that they don't identify as spadefish eggs. Could be they are placeholders for when they do decide to implement them, but it seems currently, reefback eggs are indeed not in the game.

You can put them in you inventory and when you let them loose in the wild they explode to full size instantly.
Fun with exploding reefbacks.
'Twas very fun :)
