Not really much you “need” to know except peepers and reginalds are the best fish if you can get them!

Peepers are the best (early game) food source
Bladderfish are the best for water untill you can make bleach.

There's a guide with tips for complete self sufficiency.

It might have some interesting tips.

With so many hours in Freedom you're in a position to decide how you want to address Food & Water right from the start.

You can either take the beginner route and cook fish, turn Bladderfish into water and use Bleach to make bigger waters, or you can (gonna spoiler tag this for true beginners who don't want spoilage) rush the Floating Island for edible plants, rush the Wreck at the base of the Mountain Island for the Stillsuit, and/or rush the Water Filtration machine from the Jellyshroom cave Degasi base.

If you're okay with using mods, there's also now a Custom Food mod that adds 6 Juices (+40 Water, +30 Food) and 4 Nutrient Cakes (+40 Food, +30 Water) to basically make staying fed and hydrated an afterthought.

Put it this way - in terms of your regular diet, you'll turn vegetarian soon enough, you'll see..

Do ever need to cure fish?

Only if you want to store the food long term.

Cooled fish spoils over time.
I'd you only cook your fish shortly before eating them, you'll be fine.

I guess that's what the Alien Containment module is for. To farm your own fish.

I always keep 3 or 4 cured somewhere close (on me or on my SeaMoth/prawn). Some place within 100 meters so it’s less disruptive if the food meter gets low while exploring or gathering stuff. Same with water!

cured fish will never spoil but will increase thirst, so if you take cured fish on a journey take some water as well. cooked fish will spoil quite quickly and will all fruits and veggies that you have in your inventory

If you want to eat while you're on an extended trip from your base .... it's the only food you can take with you that won't spoil.

Water filtration machine vs a couple of coffee dispensers?

Yeah before you get the cyclops (if you get the cyclops) it’s even more important for exploration trips.

Filtartion machine will give you large water and salt, but uses a lot of power and time.
Coffee machine is cheap to build, only about 4 water per cup but uses no power and can be used as many times as you want, plus “ You look like you could use a coffee”

How much coffee can you drink before you get the blood loss detected message?
Cougarific Apr 11, 2018 @ 10:21am
Once you have the Thermal Blade curing fish is no longer the best choice for long trips. Just cook and eat on the run without the -H2O penalty from the salty cured fish. Keep one Nutrient Block in your Inventory for emergencies but otherwise just use the Thermal Blade.

Coffee Machines take up less space and far less power (plus don't forget you can brew two coffees at once, just press the coffee button twice), but Water Filtration machines provide the biggest bottles available in-game.

Personally I never build the Water Filtration machine - takes up too much space and too much power and by the time you can scan and build one you're more than able to head out to the Floating Island to grab some Bulbo Trees and Marblemelons to use instead.

I don't think that's a thing anymore.
