Closest geyser/volcano to the lifepod?
I'm pretty "new" to this game and i really want a stable power supply with a thermal plant.

just put the thermal plant on top of the structure you want to power.

there is one within a few hundred meters, i usually just build a tall base with a bioreactor and peppered with solar cells

^Wha? No.

You put the Thermal Reactor near a heat source like a vent as the OP says.

OP the lifepod spawns at a random location every time (within the Safe Shallows) so it's hard to say where yours is based on that one screenshot.

Just keep your *ears* open as you swim around and home in on the vent by using the roaring sound it makes when it vents.

You can either swim in an expanding spiral around your base or just set out in one direction, swim a hundred meters or so, sit and listen. If you don't hear a vent, move back to base and swim out in a different direction.

You don't even need to put it on top of a structure. I put mine on the seafloor next to it.

No .. you don't need a vent. You can put it anywhere the ocean temp is over 25 degrees C. I have one right next to my base strructure right by my life pod and the closest vent is 290 M to the north.

^Are you guys talking about solar panels? Thermal reactors require thermal activity to work.

No - they just require a high enough temp. Over 25 degrees C

That's at my base right next to my lifepod near the Aurora.

Okay - not gonna get a lot of power out of it but if it works, it works! :steamhappy:

That's my point though. That and a couple solar panels at your base provide usally morethan enough power. I like the bioreactors too so I built those before I had the blueprints for the thermal plant. Gel sacks are great for bioreactors - have a couple planters for the gel sacks.

I was really surprised when the thermal plant worked at my base as I thought you had to have a vent too. Just need temps warm enough. The warmer the better though! lol

In colder water you need vents or to be close enough to them, so deeper bases, yeah.

There's a vent at the northern end of the central Safe Shallows zone. It's bordered by a Kelp Forest biome to the W/SW and a Grassy Plateau biome to the N/NE. The vent provides 50 degrees C.

Just use solar panels. That is the best source in shallow water. You will want to build several, but they are cheap and easy.

I just built my first base near lifepod 5 and put it on top didn't give a bunch of power, but i've added a nuclear plant since. put one on my moonpool also, I'm still learning. Sooooo.....
