Is the bulb zone a decent place for a second base?
My first one's right next to where my escape pod landed, and is more an underwater apartment where I keep storage lockers, some QoL stuff like a trash can and an upgrade table, and knick-knacks from the aurora. I need more room and more power, and I noticed some vents in the bulb zone in between the 17 gorillion eletric eel things.

I suggest building your second base on the bulb zone or blood kelp zone, really near an Entrance to the Lost River :) Powered by a Nuclear Reactor (The Rods last forever and are easy to make)

If you can find a good spot without a bunch of bone sharks or ampeels go for it. Koosh is very peaceful otherwise. Problem is bone sharks are everywhere.

I personally would find somewhere else with thermal vents/geysers, or wait for the nuclear reactor and then build somewhere a little safer. Anywhere else haha. I personally build an apartment in the shallows, Like you. Then when I get directions from a certain event I'll build by an island and that area becomes my main base. Near the surface for easy solar power.

Then when I need to go toward end game area I build a second base near the entrance to that area.

I guess to give a more specific answer: Island is a good choice. Mushroom forest is a great choice. Blood Kelp is a good choice, depending on where you are. Koosh zone too spoopy for me.

Edit: Mushroom forest has a lot of entities to load in, so that area might be laggy af for load times.

I get the normal pop-in in the mushroom forest, but that's about it.

Depends entirely on what and why you're building it. If you just need more room there's nothing wrong with expanding your existing one. Usually I only build a second base in the Lost River, and that's simply to allow for battery/cell recharging.

I figured I'd need to build an inordinate amount of solar panels to run the two flavors of chargers and a moonpool. I have thermal generator tech, but not nuclear yet, which is why I figured I'd look around for vents.

If thermal power is your only requisite there are places to use those in the shallows :) If you want a change of scenery pretty much everywhere is good enough. Worst case scenario build a bio reactor and an indoor planter and go to town. I built my second base in the mushroom forest on top of the big tree. Close to the surface so solar does the trick then you have plenty of room around to build, zero enemies, close to 4 other biomes, plenty of resources and pretty at night time.

I use four solar powers to power my Three Moon pools. Going to build a nuclear reactor in the Lost River entrance in the BK zone. ( Using specific names now since you seem to know all the areas/people already dropped names ) I don't like having my main base in the shallows because well, it's shallow, and it's kinda far from everywhere else i want to do. Mountain Island is more of a central hub for my personal activities, so I build there.

Plus, you notice there's an Alien Arch in the water by mountain Island. Having a base there is handy for spoiler reasons.

EDit: Also Mountain island is close to Koosh, Mushroom Forest, Kelp, Underwater islands, Blood kelp. The only biomes really that's out of the way is Grand Reef/Sea Trader/Floater Island, and 'I personally' Don't see any reason to go to those areas more than once.

Also there are geysers and vents close to the island. Just use a few power transmitters and you're golden! They're inbetwen the Underwater Islands and Mountain Island.

Edit 2: Chnged Floating islands to underwater islands cuz I'm dumb and got the name wrong.

Ive found building near a geyser is a great building choice. This makes living in a habitat much easier since you can generate lots of power fast. The bio reactor is also a nice alternative but it also needs a lot of upkeep.

I like my fist base location at the SW Grassy Plateau, NE of that big wreck and on the edge of the Safe Shallows there. It is fairly central to all resources. The Jellyshroom Cave is also just below it. I power the base with solar first then bio. Later I can add trasmitters and thermal from the cave below.

After that I build a small scanner base in the Deep Grand Reef. Just a a simple one habitat + scanner with thermal power.

My other main base is always in the Lost River Junction. This is near the big tree and outside the research facility.
Basically just above that fossile there is a safe area with two thermal vents in the middle that provide plenty of power.
It is also fairly close to the Ghost Forrest portal. Makes it easy to move around.

This isn't a bad idea at all. I may build there this time instead of at the Bloodroot between the LR and the North BKZ. Only issue I see is making it there safely with all of your tools when you have a certain friend who likes to stop you from doing things. Like living.

I'm not that far along yet, but I've been building scanner bases in almost every area that I wanted to explore and couldn't do easily.

I even built one by the Aurora's aft as a save & scanner point.
The scanner room is incredibly helpful for finding stuff! :steamhappy:

Not gonna lie but to me that sounds like a lot of wasted resources. I nevr build more than one. Especially with the camera drone bug that's still going on.

Did you manage to find all 3 parts to build the seamoth?

Cause I didn't, so my ONLY recourse to exploring deep sites and caves is to build a base.
The one next to the glowy shroom caves, I even ran oxygen pipes down just so I could explore it a bit better.
That did turn out to be a bit pointless, since the camera drones work so well!

What bug are you talking about?
Mine worked good for even LONG exploration trips, so long as I stayed inside the zone.
There was one time that I flipped back and forth really fast while trying to open inventory and they both permenetly bugged out; that got fixed by picking them up and re-releasing them though.

That's the bug. If you have multiple scanner room drones and you try to cycle it breaks them. The farther away the scanner rooms are from eachother, the worse it is. And you can get 2/3 seamoth frags from the aurora. And there are a ton of seamoth frags in the Grassy Plateaus. There's one directly by one of the first lifepods you get directions to for that biome. :D

And I merely suggest moving the scanner room depending on where you are/what you need. I use the drones for beacons more than anything else.

I got 2 fragment scans on the way to the first pod we are told about... #3? I think.
But NONE in the aurora
I did get all 4 prawn scans there.

What room of the aurora has the seamoth fragments that I apparently missed?
