Incentive for building water filtration machine?
Im sure this has been discussed, but I'm kind of new to all of this ... Well, it takes days and days to make ONE bottle of water and it uses alot of energy, and it isn't easy to build (needs gel sacks).

So, it's just soooo much easier to make a bunch of bleach and quickly mass produce bottles of water. Or am I missing something?

uhm

yeah, waterfiltration makes 2x +50 water
and 2x salt deposits

you can bring the huge water with you which saves space and produce salt in areas where you wouldn't find salt

Each disinfected water gives you 30 H2O back. The Filtered Water from the Filtration Machine gives 50 H2O back. Aside from that, it's easy to just leave it going and then go out on an adventure, and when you come back you have 2 bottles of water waiting for you.

It's a matter of efficiency - two water bottles that give 100 H2O, or 3 water bottles that only give 90? Saves an extra inventory slot and gives you more to boot.

On that note, it also isn't super long for the filtration machine to work... I've found it never takes more than an in-game day for one of the huge bottles.

For bleach you need coral sample. And those only exist in the Safe Shallows. So are you gonna treck from 1 200 meters below to the Shallows just to get some coral so you can make some bloody water, or are you gonna build a filtration machine and safe yourself the trip? :P

It's helpful all-around if you haven't found a growbed blueprint yet and want to dedicate your time to getting other things instead, and it's helpful regardless as a travel-item since it only takes up one space and gives a whopping 50% hydration back. Thirst is a killer at certain points in the game.

Erm.. Properly supplied with energy, it takes about fifteen minutes per generated water bottle, and seven or so per salt (Which can be combined into more water)... A single machine can give more water than you need, Let alone crafting more. Also: Gel secks are plantable, and growable to obtain more, You only really need to find one, and the exterior growbed chematic on the floating island.

I have two machines running in my base. I have more water than I ever need, got bottles stuffed into lockers.

The incentive for me is self-sustainability and efficiency. With marblemelons as a supplement, I'm easily keeping my water needs fulfilled with just one water filtration machine. Also, as has already been stated, those large bottles of water allow you to take a lot of water with you with minimum impact to inventory space for when you need to take extended trips away from home.

Yes, water filtration machines cost alot of energy to run. But once you have stored enough water and salt just leave them and they will not use any energy. I normally build 4x water filtration machines in a multi room. Of course these are late/end game items so high energy costs and build cost are expected. Energy choices are a large consideration here, while solar has a highest rate of recharge in terms of room, cheepness and placeability, and nuclear having the highest capacity/recharge per unit.

My personal prefrance for a water filtration room is 1 foundation and 4x4 of solar panels at a safe shallows base. This will give you a very high recharge rate with 1250+ energy capacity.

Large amounts of quartz can be easily found in the northen Blood Klep area. I tend to find large amounts of limestone on the sandy areas around the Floating island area while this also provides titanium.

It's best to have 2 or 3 water filtration machines. Yeah they draw a lot of power when they're running but they produce so much water it's worth the energy cost. Supplement the water they provide by growing marblemelons and bulbo trees (both give a lot of water when eaten fresh) and save your water bottles for when you go out exploring and resource farming. After a couple of cycles you'll have more water than you need and can afford to let a machine sit full (so it's not burning power) once in a while.

hmmm. Everyone is saying how it makes so much water ... I guess I should give it some time, or ... maybe my game is bugged.

see, I made the machine and then it took about 4 in-game days to make a single bottle of water that doesn't even fill my thirst meter. And it gave me no salt. And now it's starting over at 0 for, I assume, another 4 days. I guess it's nice to be gone for a long time and come home to some water waiting for me. But,

The tech in this game is pretty advanced (fabricator) and the water machine is huge and works non stop, humming away. I guess I was expecting more than that single bottle. I'm not upset, the game is awesome. I'm just saying.

... Did you build it above water? The water purifier doesn't work right if you build it above water because it's meant to be built in the water. It takes a super long time to produce a single water and gives no salt if it's built above water. It still takes a while per bottle, but when built below water it'dd produce over 5 bottles for ever 1 bottle it produces above water, not to mention more salt than you can ever use. You just have to stop looting the salt once you have enough of a reserve else you'll have lockers upon lockers full of the stuff.

Its very probable that you aren't providing enough power to fully satisfy the machine if it took 4 ingame days just to produce water (Though it should have made 2 salt in the same time..) It uses like, 1.25~ energy a second taking it 3 or 4 at a time or so....

.....OHHH, Did you build your base (Or at least the portion of it that contains the water purifier) above water?) If you did that totally explains your problem. When not in a submerged multipurpose room it still generates water, but it takes like eight times as long, and wont produce any salt.
mitc1111 Jan 28, 2018 @ 11:56pm
OH, the room I built it in is not above water but ... well, maybe it is. I have a room that's above the water, and the room I have the water machine in is one below that. I assumed it was under water, but it might be right at the surface edge and the game might be considering it above water.

Duh, I should have guessed. Ok, I'm going to move it one room below the current one to make sure it's completely under water.

Thanks much.

I use a single planter of marblemelons when I am at my base. That keeps my food AND water up at all times, so I have no need for anything else. I have a water filter set up so I can stockpile the +50 water (best in the game) for long trips. I use the salt from it to cure fish for that as well. So basically I use melons for home and the water filter gives me everything I need for when I'm gone for a while.
