First Base Problems
I'm trying to build my first base. I have put down the foundation and first compartment, but when I try to add onto it it isn't letting me build.

The piece is just showing up red like this. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

One of the sides of the comparment is too close to terrain

It's the same on the other side though, and that's a drop off. Or is it because I already put a hatch on that side?

Maybe you need to check one more left? Sometimes the parts will build a connection between them without actually showing up. So try to put a gap there. Or try to expand on the other side. And a hatch definitely block new part connection.

Yeah you can't connect if there is a hatch. And it may indeed not be possible on the site you attempt to because it's too close to the terrain, it's not clearly visible from the screenshot.

Okay, I guess I built it in a crappy place. If I deconstruct everything, do I lose materials?
Noru Jan 28, 2018 @ 1:22pm
No, you only lose time and the electricity in the solar panel :) And you also don't need the flat foundation, but it helps with the structural integrity.

Ok, first you don't "need" a foundation to make a base. You only need them when the hull points are getting low and when you start finding lithium they just becomes useless for everything except for a flat place to put your outdoor growbeds. And even then it's optional.

As for why it won't place. Do you have anything built inside the first one close to or up against the back wall? This will stop it building.
As you said, it's likely because of the hatch it won't place on the other side unless you also have something built inside close to the hatch on that side to.

Thanks everyone for the help. Like an idiot I had built lockers near the back wall of the compartment, they were stopping me from building onto the structure. Thanks again.

He probably isn't doing anything wrong. I have noticed that Subnautica is a buggy piece of crap. They need to fix their base building on it.

How have you noticed that, you don't even own the game?

If you've pirated it; that's up to you. I pirated it the day it came.out, then I realised it was worth every penny. Maybe you just don't like the game?

I will concede that it has more bugs than a Nigerian hooker though.

It's not that I don't like the game. Quite the opposite, but I won't buy a game until I have tried it first. Most games I own on Steam I pirated but liked them so much I bought them. However, as much as I like this game, no matter what I try, the base building just won't work properly. I place a multi use building, and some tunnels, and an entrance hatch, but it won't let me connect a second building. And it has nothing to do with my location. I tried it all over my starting location about a km in every direction, but to no avail. I even went into the deepest water I could find after and still not happening. If they fix that, I would be more than happy to purchase the game. It IS really fun.

So you stole the car from the forecourt, drove it around and either hid it away or have dumped it. Now you have the audacity to turn up on the manufacturer's doorstep demanding they sort the faults out for you to go joy riding again?

What a criminal smeghead!

Let me guess, you also scored negative on your last IQ test?

He downloaded data.
If I hadn't pirated this game the day it came out I would have probably never bought it.
Piracy can be a good thing, it introduces people to games they may otherwise ignore completely.

As for your comparison to stealing a car, grow up. There is no way you can draw a parallel between actual theft and piracy; when you steal something it's gone, when you download a file you're simply getting an exact copy, the original is still there.
He's said that base building is intolerable for him due to the bugs and that if they smoothed things out he would pay for the game in a heartbeat.
Not to mention, he now knows about subnautica; it might come up in conversation and he might say "It's a great game but the bugs in base building ruined it for me" the person/s on the other end of that conversation may not care so much about base building and thus may buy the game.

Even Notch was pro-piracy. Effectively he said something along the lines of "If your game is simply getting pirated, make it a better game" and you can't really argue the fact that he got filthy rich off making minecraft; which was an idea he effectively stole from a vapourware game.

TL;DR everyone engages in "theft" of intellectual property to some degree.
