Prawn suite useless without the cyclops?
So after the moth I just build the prawn suite. I don't have the materials for a rocket addon nor do I have the cyclops. Now the prawn suite is very slow and without the rocket addon I might fall deep down and never come back. Because its slow it makes zero sense to explore with it. You could scout with moth, set radio beacons for materials to drill and come back later. Sounds very tedious.

TLDR: Is prawn useless without the cyclops?

It's not used for exploration (not in Seamoth conditions, anyway). It's mainly for work/combat. As far as movement goes yeah - Cyclops is the go-to for transporting it unless you want to use the rocket upgrade and the rope launcher like I do, it gets around quite fast.

I explored the lost river in my Prawn so I would say that it is far from useless. Two grappling hooks and you can go just about everywhere. Climbing some areas can be a pain but so long as you have two you should be fine. Word of advice though, bring a few backup power cells and batteries, you really don't want to get stuck down there with just a knife and two O2 tanks.

Above ground there are big stretches where there's nothing for the Grappling Arm to latch onto so going will be very slow. Once you get into the lower areas you have a lot more opportunities to use it, at which point you can move around faster than the Cyclops.

So yes, above ground you need the Cyclops to move around faster than a snail's pace - but underground is where you can start Spider Man-ing.

The prawn suit is FAR from useless without the cyclops. As i have said before in other threads, the prawn suit is MANDITORY to beat the game. You can't do without it. the Cyclops on the other hand is OPTIONAL, you can beat the game without building the cyclops.

Until you can afford to Bionic Commando your way around with a grappling arm and a rocket backpack, don't stray too far from the beaten path or scout ahead via seamoth.
I did that to get to the Giant Cove Tree and set up a moon pool and scanning room next to a heat area as a forward base to get me closer to some deeper, late game resources, and with a carefully beaconed path the trek from and to my escape pod homebase wasn't impossible.

At least the jump jet upgrade doesnt require kyanite anymore and the grapple arm is cheap.

You cannot beat the game without Cyclops because you need the Cyclopse Shield Upgrade for the last part of the rocket. So you need to build the Cyclops, and inside it build the Cyclops Shield Module. Prawn is great for exploring the deeps and you can also return. I suggest using a grappling hook and at some point you will learn how to use the momentum from the grappling to jump for a great distance. Do not forget to bring replacement power cells (not battiers like i did) or else you will be stuck at 1400m depth :)

In my experience the Cyclops being nearby is a huge time saver.

By having to go all the way home to charge it, you are wasting a ton of time and power. Plus you can extend your scavenging trips by unloading stuff at the Cyclops.

If you get deep enough, there are portals that take you all the way back to the surface.

And yes, you can get it stuck in places without a grappling arm or jump jet upgrade but I can only name one obvious place where this is the case and that's the Jellyshroom Caves.
i dont use the prawn suit unless i have both the mining drill and the grapple hook. otherwise its quite limited. and aside from drilling with it and using it to look for stalker teeth and wait for them. it isnt very useful otherwise. since the terrain in the biomes is so so so varying and the many ridges valleys holes and other obstructions make navigation difficult.

oh the prawn can withstand the acidic brine pools in the lost river so there is that too

The only part where the prawn suit is useless without the Cyclops is when there's no ground beneath to thread on.

Thanks for replies. I build the cyclops and the game became much more interesting and easier at this point :)
