So yes, above ground you need the Cyclops to move around faster than a snail's pace - but underground is where you can start Spider Man-ing.
I did that to get to the Giant Cove Tree and set up a moon pool and scanning room next to a heat area as a forward base to get me closer to some deeper, late game resources, and with a carefully beaconed path the trek from and to my escape pod homebase wasn't impossible.
By having to go all the way home to charge it, you are wasting a ton of time and power. Plus you can extend your scavenging trips by unloading stuff at the Cyclops.
