Is building a base in the floating islands a good idea?
It's very pretty there, and there are lots of great materials to harvest, but I don't feel like fighting off bonesharks constantly.

On a scale of 1/10, how recommended is setting up a base in the Floating Island biome?

If you ever see a place in this game and think "I'm home". Then it is a good place to build a base.

And it sounds like you found yours.

I think I'll try it out, see how it goes, and worst comes to worst I'll be stuck in an endless loop of deaths and respawning.

My only problem building in the underwater islands was they smashed my seamoth while it was docked in the moonpool. They left the base itself alone.

The cannon is a better location for reasons that will reveal themselves.

Ah, yes, I forgot about them....

In theory, if you made a tall tower going up from the base to close to the surface you might be abled to place a moonpool up there and it could be high enough that with luck the bonesharks won't find it up there.

The prawn you'd just have to keep in the cyclops.

There is a ridge on the South side of mountain island next to the floating islands where I built a large base that was pretty peaceful.

I built a base on the solid island, and started one on the floating island also. However, before you go down that path you should know that this game does not support much out-of-water height easily. About 3 decks up is all you can get to without getting really tricky. IOW, your prawn cannot fly very high on land, and there are no outside ladders. And the construction ability has a range limit, which is pretty much 3 levels above your head. So, if you're not wanting to build any skyscrapers, then I do recommend building a base on an island. I have 7 bases in various zones, including in the blue waters, but my main base is on the solid island. There, I have a really cool garden growing every above-water plant variety found on the planet. (and I also have underwater gardens growing every water plant at all other bases) :)
