Where is the best place to build a permanent base?

I'm trying to find a good spot to place my first permanent base. Where should I put it?

I tend to like the NW mushroom forest.
I have had bases on the top of the giant tree and above the notch heading down to the blood kelp zone.
That area has access to several biomes with good resources and proximity to late game locations.

I selected the shallows near my life pod. Look around a bit and you can find a few thermal vents nearby to use for power. Also, the area has almost no predators; very safe.

Anywhere that isn't right in the middle of the safe shallows. As the game goes on you will need some deeper waters to park your cyclops.
Anywhere away from the kelp forests helps to not be bothered by stalkers and not have them run off with all your scanner drones.
Spots near thermal vents are popular for the easy access to better power they offer. But this can be got around by using power relays.

Personally I'm a fan of putting them in any area with fun rock formations I can build around, over and sometimes even under. As such most of my bases end up in the red grass biomes.

There is a spot in the red grass biome to the North East that overlooks the mushroom forest there. So far that is my favorite.

I have built at the junction of the mushroom forest/safe shallows/crash zone where they all come together. Easy access to the bulb zone lost river entrance (about 600m away), lots of titanium in the crash zone, copper/lithium/shale in the mushroom forest, and no predators if you are just inside the safe shallows, and it is deep enough to park the cyclops. Another choice is the saddle beside the sparse reef wrecks, though it is not as convenient to get into the lost river and the end game areas. Within 500m is pretty much everything you will need outside of the lost river. You can build at the lost river tree cove, but you can't get a seamoth in there (unless you are using one of the many mods

)

I usually put mine in the Kush zone, on the promontory. I love the ambiance there, except for the Ampeels.
It has a few Lava Geysers nearby should you want to power your base with those and you can harvest the Bulbs for easy water.
The big points are that the Cyclops-able Lost River entrance is in a straight line from there (I'd sometime put up Power Transmitters as road signals) and right below the base you have an Alien cache.

That's what make the game great though. No absolute best.

I'd love to make a huge base around the Ghost Tree but the lack of quick access to it is a big minus point for example. Too bad, a fully circular base with windows all around would look fantastic.
