Crack them open and grab the surprise.
I usually find copper, gold and silver in those.
Maybe RNG is on your side.
I usually find a lot of silver, gold, lithiuum, copper and Mercury around Precursor island.
This is where I found all my silver. Caves and tunnels are loaded with it above ground.
They just wouldn't respawn, at all.
And just out of curiosity, what do you consider a "decent amount" for a silver hunting run?
Decent amount? I don't know... At least 20. That's 5 wiring kits, 5 chips and 5 advanced wiring kits.

Only at least you know where to find stalkers and what to do to get their teeth after that it's pure RNG.
But silver? First you have to find where sandstones are (and they are the rarest resource chunks because limestone is common as heck and everything else pretty much grows in monopoly in the right areas that you just need to find). And THEN you also have to gamble with RNG for 50/50 gold/silver, and for some reason i usually get 2 gold per 1 silver.
Which is truly taunting, because gold is like twice less useful than silver, unless you are going to craft hell ton of advanced wiring kits, in which case 2/1 works perfectly.
20 isn't nearly enough to cover a lot of stuff you want, i know because i collected more from the underground tunnels under the creepvine zones and i quickly run out due to how specialised the whole thing is and another thing, table coral gets sparse pretty quickly the more adv. wiring kits and computer chips you make.
now i have been able to check those vents plus the grassy plateau borders along the dunes zone and some tunnels leading towards a specific jellyshroom cave that only has one shroom in it and it has a single crabsnake egg in it. when you look around enough along a number of locations you can easily get into the 30-40 silver mark within a few hours of searching.
Considering how much "Nuh uh, I got over 20 silver on my first try! You looking for hours and busting open 40 sandstone only to get seven silver just means you are not trying hard enough!" has been the response from the most vocal of their playerbase, no wonder it's taken them so long to realize, though.
The last one of these threads I read, you even got a guy going "LOL just use the Prawn Suit's drill arm for silver!"... Which, kinda of requires you to have already gotten piles and piles of silver to own such a thing.
Then again, another popular comment is to tell people struggling with battery supply before they have unlocked the battery charger or mod statio so they can't just recharge them or make charge fins... to use the battery charger or mod station to make charge fins anyways.
Limestone, Sandstone, and Basalt. Sandstone can drop silver and i usually find it near creepvine forests.
Most of the time you need silver is for computer chips, and it's one silver per chip. Between the two thermal vents and a few trips to the kelp forests, you should be able to find all the silver you need until you unlock the prawn and moonpool fragments you need to build the drill arm. The vehicle mod station isn't even a problem anymore, Aurora is loaded with them.
