You can fit up to 3 in a single multi-purpose room.
And yes, bladderfish breed, actually they breed a lot, I always have to free some.
Nice, I had fitted a 2nd MPR ontop of the first one to create a Food farm i'll go an pop in 2 aquariums as well and fill it up with some Bladderfish until I can find the Filtration thingy then!
Technically you can fit 8 water purifiers in a multipurpose room however that leaves no room for an entrance into the room apart from a ladder in the middle going up or down
4 is a good number if you want to be able to enter and exit a room from the side
Of course one thing that should be mentioned is that the water purifier does suck a fair bit of energy so might want to make sure you have adequate power generation before you start building some.
That said an aquarium full of bladderfish is the more energy friendly method of getting a renewable energy source, that said one thing that should be noted is that fish will only breed if they are placed in a large aquarium (correct me if I am wrong) or "alien containment" unit as it is now known, the regular aquarium wont cut it. Also it should be noted that you no longer start off with the alien containment bluprints, you need to search for them in the wrecks, I think I found mine in a wreck in Sea Treader's path so unless anyone has any alternate locations it is probably the best place to start looking, watch out for the warpers though.
Also while you have stated food isnt a problem I just want to point out that the large aquarium is also a good renewable source of food as well, Reginald as far as I know fills the most hunger per fish and if you cure them with salt (you should get plenty of salt as a byproduct of the water purifier) they wont spoil on you so you can take them as a snack on longer journeys.
Also I have 1 water filtration and that produces more than enough water along with some lantern fruit or chinese potatos for food. Also I have lockers full of salt from just 1 machine so idk why you would need more than a single machine in one location.
Make sure they're by themselves in order to min/max the number of bladderfish that can breed / populate the tank. (Each tank has a max population, so other fish in the tank will decrease the max population that the bladderfish can breed to).
Plus, it's just easier to catch them if they're the only thing in there.
Once you find the Water Purifier fragments, I found that 2 running constantly pretty much generates enough water if you're not using a Stillsuit. 1 is enough if you are running a stillsuit.
They eat power like popcorn, though.
My rule-of-thumb is for every water filtration unit I have running, I get 1 bioreactor running, too... just to meet the needs of the water filtration unit.
If you don't have a still suit, then 2 water filtration units will need to run all the time to meet your water needs. (one just isn't quite enough.. unless you really like hunting down coral and converting salt into bleach).
On my last play-through I didn't find the stillsuit until the very end. So, I had 2 water filtration units + 2 bioractors running non-stop.
I started my base with 6 solar panels for initial fabrication, but to meet my added energy demands for power cell / battery recharging and moonpool recharges, I added a nuclear power plant.
You'll know if your water filtration unit is eating too much power, b/c you'll constantly be waiting for energy to recharge to frabricate something, or you'll hear everything power up and power down constantly at night (when solar panels stop working). Bioreactors are a cheap energy source.
I had 2 containment pools... 1 with rabbit rays for bioreactor fuel and 1 with peepers for food. I would just check the bioreactors periodically, and swipe some rabbit rays and peepers to feed them to keep operations going.
(Before they nerfed it in a patch, lantern fruit (yellow fruit tree) was a great water and food source. But, now it barely replenishes anything, and you'll vomit and take damage if you eat too many of them.)
How do you make the melon "reproduce" as it were?
You cut it with a Survival Knife each melon give 4 seeds... and you can plant 16 in a single indoor planter.
Got 4 planters going in a single MPR: 2 with melons, 1 with Potatoes and 1 with lantern fruit... and I got 4 Aquariums going with Bladderfish now I'm set until they send help my way :) They better bring a laser cutter though since they will have to cut a wall out of an MPR to get me out!
If you want to be minimalistic, even a single machine supported by 8 solar panels is enough to provide you with a drink to take with you while you're exploring, and give you extra for you to store for later - Provided you're using a growbed full of marblemelons to feed yourself while in your base.
Don't forget the Stillsuit too. :)
