It's a product of a dystopian future where companies rule instead of nations and the employee's safety is often an afterthought. This is a fictional company that only had one fully functional lifepod out of 17, and even lifepod 5 has major issues.
not so distant future seeing as in the US we now have a supreme court justice who sided with a company that fired a guy for leaving his truck when he would have died if he hadn't.
the lifepods all probably worked fine as we saw at the beginning of the game, they just aren't that durable and they took damage from the ship being shot down and some were ripped open by the locals
1km in the game map would sound about right.
So.. yeah.. she's kind of a jacka** at times.
But, that's part of her personality, and endears me to her.

not only that, but i beleive the pda for that one is a recored of someone not being able to dress themselves
