Step two, plan to try not to go near those places when you next try to get there.
Step three, pray it works this time.
Step four, pray harder.
So if you want a better leviathan spawn selection you may want to start a new game a few times until you find one that does not spawn so many of them around the Aurora.
You may have a few ugly encounters figuring out where these are. My advice is to use a Seamoth (not the Seaglide; you will die), and RUN AT THE FIRST ROAR.
Some helpful "wisdom" about Reapers:
If you can hear the roar, it knows you're there and is coming for you. When you STOP hearing the roar, it's right behind you.
They tend to avoid the surface. This is not 100% foolproof, but a rule of thumb. You're safer at 10m than you are at 100m.
If you know one is nearby, stay well away from rocks, cliff faces, and the sea floor UNLESS it's very shallow water in the first place (75m or shallower), or you are already actively fleeing an attack (see below). Reapers are buggy and clip through terrain to strike at you from inside it without warning.
Even an unmodified Seamoth can survive one (usually only one, but sometimes up to 2) grapples from a Reaper. The instant it lets you go, start running, and try to put terrain (including creepvine) between you and it ASAP. It's faster than your Seamoth in a straight line, but less maneuverable. Later on, you can get hull upgrades that reduce his damage, and a Perimeter Defense module that shocks him into letting you go immediately, before he does hardly any damage at all. It's still terrifying though, even at the 100th time. It just doesn't get old.
As far as the Aurora goes, there are 3 of them right next to it, and there are paths to the ship between them where they almost never appear. As you discovered, hugging the port side of the ship is NOT one of those paths. One of the biggest openings in their patrol is near the front where the entrance is. You have to get out and go up the "ramps" that come down into the water, then find your way inside from there. If you find a door you can't get through, keep looking for another. They're not right down by the water.
Good luck!
To answer the OP, I was always able to make it safely to the aurora with regular swimming, seaglider, and seamoth by hugging the left side (port) of the ship and staying near the surface (your forced to due to sand).
I could hear the reaper's roar, but it never came for me.
Isn't the reaper there as part of the story? Seem to recall a pda entry about it from an upside-down lifepod in the area. Just curious as people have mentioned different spawn locations.
