Self-sustainable Cyclops?
Okay fellow survivors of Planet 4546B, I have a question (most likely for the seasoned veterans of this game).

I've worked on having a self-sustainable base in the game. Got my base by a thermal vent, water filtration, Alien Containment Tanks, Thermal Generators for power, a Bioreactor for supplimentary power if needed. My base is pretty self sufficent and never worry about running out of power, water, or food.

So, my next challenge is to find a way to be self sufficient in the Cyclops (if possible). I know I can put a grow bed inside. I've even heard someone say they put Solar Panels on top of their Cyclops (apparently doesn't charge the fuel cells though, but maybe fuel cell chargers?). I have the upgrade that charges fuel cells through heat (takes a long time and seems the effect does not stack with multiple upgrade modules).

My main problem is self-sustained water. I don't want to have to swim out and collect Bladder Fish and store them in an aquarium. Last I checked, the fish will not reproduce in an aquarium like they do in Alien Containment.

So, any good tips on making a Cyclops Base self-sufficient?

Note: Super excited on a future update to allow the Cyclops to dock with bases.

I would recommend a still-suit, but that wouldn't really be part of the cyclops..

Stillsuit and the token amount of water from plants is your only "Internal" source of water, with no access to alien containment tanks or filtration machines. Stillsuits only pop out bags worth +20 water every so often though.

Keep in mind that the blood vomit triggers from chowing down on the same object several times in short order. Which is mostly seen when trying to top up your bars with fruit, as fish+bottles lets you top up both meters before kicking that in.

You CAN try for self sufficient Cyclops. But basically only do it just to say that you did.

If you are going to drive over to singular thermal vents anyways. just build small outposts with power cell chargers in them, and pretend swapping out your empties into them is your "Cyclops thermal reactor" actually being worth a damn.

Just grow marblemeons inside your cyclops. They are high in both food and water content, so they are OP. Or you could have a vending machine and coffee maker, both of which provide unlimited food and water.

And maybe if you use a solar charger upgrade in a seamoth and use that to individualy charge the power cells of your cyclops, you could then have self sustaining cyclops.

You'll vomit blood before you can top up your water meter with mellons, unless you like standing around twiddling your thumbs waiting on the snack cooldown that is. Marblemelons are weaker than the worst bottles when it comes to water.

"High in water content", riiiiight. It's Kindergarten math how wrong that is. 15 is less than 20, and other bottles are worth 40 and 50.

OP, anybody telling you that fruit is "Broken" are people who are too scared to spend any real amount of time away from their base or cyclops. It's handy to have around when you visit home, but it's no replacement for REAL sources of water, even ignoring the fact it's useless as a travel food source.

I would reccomend having A growbed for emergency food and then just bring dried fish and water for days

I think I have an idea on being self sufficent with food and water! A mix of Marblemelon and Bulbo Trees. Marblemelon gives 22 food and 15 water. That is good, but eventually, I'll run out of water without a still suit. However, the Bulbo Tree gives 3 food and 10 water. So, one gives more food, while the other gives more water. So,I'd eat a few melons, then top off with Bulbo Tree pieces before my food hits 100.

I just wish the sub could have solar panels to charge my Fuel Cell Chargers. Oh well, occasional base resupplies for fuel I guess.

^This.

But TBH a mix of all the growable food is the best way to go once you develop a sense of which gives you what in terms of food and water.

I usually have Melons, Bulbos, Chinese Potatoes and Lantern Fruit - because with the Stillsuit you will need straight-up food more than you need water - which is where the Potatoes come in - they grow fast, there are a lot of them per plant, and you can replant them without having to revert them to seeds (just another avoidable step - not the end of the world to make seeds first but if you can skip it, why not skip it).

Or sometimes you need a big chunk of food and water, so Melons. Or sometimes you just want to top off before heading out on a scavenging run, so Lantern Fruit. Or sometimes you need to top off your water but not your food, so Bulbos.

Mid- to Late-game I rarely eat fish unless it's an emergency and I'm far from "home" (base or Cyclops) so I'm forced to use the Heat Knife for a quick bite.

The themal plant for the cyclops is nice, but as you said slow. I agree with the other poster. Perhaps a single MP room or just a tube or two with thermal plants and power cell rechargers. Then you can leave some there and swap them out. Allowing you to get into, and then leave the area more readily, to get back to your "main" base.

Have a variety of plants in your Cyclops (The Bulbo Tree, Lantern Tree and a Chinese potato plant are in mine, I accidentely threw my marble melons away cuz i couldn't plant them outside), Get a vending machine and a Coffee machine as well as they're a nice deco and give you food and water.

Also try find yourself a Cyclops power efficiency module as they will conserve power, allowing you to be able to charge power cells in a power cell charger and giving you unlimited power, like Markiplier did

Also bring a fabricator as you can cook food and make water with fishes (bladderfish for water)

I haven't checked this patch/update (I've been using the sea moth with Mk3 pressure for almost everything) but last patch/update with the Cyclops efficiency upgrade my fuel cells in the charger would charge more than the Cyclops ones drained. This may have been a glitch, but I never once had to use a power cell other than the two in the charger to keep power above 90% and I used the Cyclops constantly.

Edit: Oops, slow typer I guess, Sharky beat me to it.

Edit 2: After testing and reading some other threads there is no longer a net gain from power cell chargers so unfortunately it's hovering over thermal vents to recharge from now on.

Edit 3: Gah! Late again! Sorry, didn't reload the page, Psicraft's post below is correct, no infinite power any more.

Ignore the 3 posts above. There is no free infinite power with power chargers on the cyclops anymore. Like many expected, they removed that exploit only when they could actually give us a replenishing supply (thermal).

Keep in mind you could put multiple thermal reactors in your cyclops for a linear increase in power generation.

Build four coffee machines in a line and activate each one twice (double-click) for 8 cups of coffee.

(four is just a random number, build as many or as few as you like)

If that becomes a standard solution they'll need to implement some sort of mental debuff for coffee. Have it mess with frame rate and the flow of time.

Funny how I have never vomited blood after eating 4 or 5 of them in a row. Having 2 or even just 1 small plant pot full of marblemelons will be enough to keep you alive forever, as they grow really fast and you can fit 4 of them in a single planter.

And when I say "high in water content", i mean they contain much more water than most other plants and therefore are a reliable and sustainable source of hydration. Bulbo trees are high in water content but they take forever to grow and take up a lot of space

Sure you could bring along some water bottles, but you WILL eventually run out. So growing marblemelons is a much more sustainable method.

I miss putting solar panels on the Cyclops
