Dropping items from inventory indoors.
I've noticed that it seems to be impossible to drop items from your inventory anywhere but in water, is there a reason for this?

Among other shortcomings, it is to try and avoid horrible, horrible collission problems.

The items have weight which would create problems when dropped in the lifepod or Cyclops. They could drop through the floor or cause the pod or clops to tilt.

I see, but what about in bases?

One of the previously often talked about problems in the game is how a single floater would absolutly **** up your base as it just clips through the whole place. Even now a single tiger plant will punch holes clean through your base. Trying to harvest mellons with your knife will **** up your base. Air bubbles from brain coral have also in the past been prone to devestating both base and vehichles.

Interior mechanics are essentially bare bones "There, it works." degrees of implementation. It's just easier to code around not being able to drop materials indoors. But that sort of thing is perfectly okay in the long run.

It's the issues like not being able to access vehicle inventory while they are docked that's a real detrimental to gameplay concern. Not the inability to empty out your pockets onto the floor.

i just started the game and spawned some items in midair and they seem to collide with the floor just fine, no damage alerts, no clipping through the floor (that much at least), they just kinda sit there:

As I'm Helping says, it's a coding thing. In Subnautica you're either indoors or you're outdoors (for coding purposes). Easier to just outlaw all dropping while "indoors" whether you're on a sub or in a base.

Aw, oh well, i just kinda wanted more versatility in decorating, like having folded suits on shelves, or bottles and chips left on tables and such.

Maybe make a kind of mode where you can place items and equipment like the way you can with the Arcade Gorge, Hats, and the Toy Car, but i have no clue how that would work.

There goes my plan for my Artifact research table...

There are decorative items that work like that - you can find some on the Aurora and some in abandoned lifepods or Degasi bases. Those items you can drop in your base and place on shelves and tables. Utility items (non-decorative) cannot be used like that.

There was talk of dropped items causing fps drops, eventually. That means don't drop them outdoors, either. There is a TrashCan, if you can find the blueprint.

I meant it in a decorative way, like in the same way people do with fruit bowls but never even try eating from them.
