Subnautica
Location of the compass...
So, I've been playing Subnautica off and on for quite a while now, and I tend to make a new game each time I play. My current game has a little over 7 hours on it, and I've done a lot more than I have in the past. I've been to the first island and gone inside the alien ruins, seen the ship shot down, teleported myself to another island with the ruins of past survivors, visited the aurora (need to return there now with a propulsion canon apparently) and yet I only just realized that I should have a compass of some sort. I've scoured everything and can't seem to get the blueprint for this. I tried deleting the cache files to reset the data box at Lifepod 6, but it does nothing. With the cache reset, when I open the box at Lifepod 6, he picks up the chip, looks at it and nothing happens. So either this box is for something I already have or the compass is broken in my game. With the cache files left alone the box is already open and I'm certain I would have done this ages ago.

Comments all over the forums and wiki pages indicate that the exact location of items changes a lot over time (which I have noticed). Where is the compass supposed to be as of July 6th 2017?

Also, this game is incredible. It was amazing as an undersea survival game but every time I decide to dig a bit deeper into the story and go a bit farther out to sea I'm blown away by how much content there is and the quality of it. My wife and my 3 1/2 year old daughter both love to watch it and play from time to time. My little girl now says "Protein Rich Eyeballs!" any time such a statement would be somewhat relavant in day to day life. :)

Thanks for the amazing game and keep up the awesome work!

The compass databox is located at modular wreck 18 in the kelp forest, by lifepod 6 in the southeast safe shallows (head toward the blood grass biome behind the Aurora. The lifepod is near the thermal vent) and by lifepod 3 in the northwest kelp forest.
As a heads up. there are two "Lifepod 3". The one you get the signal for is the one that has a seaglide fragment and ultra capacity tank databox.
Okay, I've looked everywhere near Lifepod 6, I managed to find the huge wreck (that doesn't actually show itself until you are very close), go inside, cut the door open and... no compass.

Then I found a wreck in the kelp forest between lifepods 6 and 3... and still no compass.

I didn't find any databoxes at either of these wrecks, just a PDA and lots of pieces of objects to scan. Helpful stuff, but not the compass.

Phaota, I'm quite confused by all the terminology though... I don't know where the blood grass biome is, and I'm not sure what you mean by mentioning both lifepods. Are there two compass locations? Are you sure your information is up to date?

Thank you!
Found it!

In my game (not in the experimental build) there was no compass near Lifepod 6 or 3. I did however find it deep inside a wreck in a Kelp Forest that I had never even seen before, which is in a completely different direction than anything I had ever gotten coordinates to. I ended up having to just use the wiki to look up the coordinates. Your directions make more sense now, but I didn't realize you were listing different possible locations, which was confusing.

Is it normal to only have Lifepod signals for 3, 6 and 17 at this point in the game? It just seems like the game should have advised me to go in this direction at some point if there was something as important as the compass out there. I think it was about 300-400 meters from my lifepod in the exact opposite direction of Lifepods 3 and 6 (they were about 600-800 meters from me when I found the compass).

A lot of lifepod signals are currently tied to crafting random crap.

For example, the closest data box for the Repulsion gun upgrade (A VERY important survival tool) is triggered by.... biolding a bio-reactor. (Which surprised Sqeauls when I mentioned it, but it's true).

Signal for Lifepod 19, which is right under floater island. Triggered by crafting a mobile vehichle bay. Which... you probaly may have not even made due to not knowing about anything far enough away to even warrant more than a seaglide. So the place you'd want to build a seamoth to reach faster, you don't get told about until-oh no ive gone cross eyed.

The compass being something you need to unlock is already a bizzare "locking stuff for the sake of locking stuff" situation. But you are hardly alone in having issues locating where they hid it this time around even after having built every vehichle and a nuclear reactor powered base.

Throw in the performance and pop-in issues, and you've got a recipe for disaster to anybody trying to progress through honest exploration. Even WITH the signal for the mentioned lifepod 19, it still didn't render until I was about to crash my seamoth into the ground last time I went after it.

And that's with trying to find it with an obvious signal locater, imagine how many lifepods, wrecks, fragments, and entire islands you may have not noticed simply due to draw distance. (keep your eye towards the sky when you head for lifepod 19. you'll see the awkwardly hanging in the air remains of a Degrasi base hanging in the sky long before the island itself starts to render)

TBF there are a lot of different ways to find that island. You could get there without ever touching the comms relay.

Just wanted to update this thread to say that on another play through with the current version, the compass isn't in any of the locations explained by users or the wiki. There are wrecks on the wiki that don't even exist any more.

Aside from cheating it in, if it isn't at any of the lifepods or at any wrecks that I can find after hours of searching... how can I find it?
I've found it pretty consistantly in the first lifepod you've given a nav point to (The one with the seaglide fragments).

Although personally, I don't find it to be that helpful. The Aurora makes a fine navigational marker, as do the numerous nav points you get naturally throughout the course of the game. Plus, I've downloaded a mod that adds in a map, which is far more useful than a simple compass.

Yes I always get it at the first lifepod I get a radio message from. But it still takes a while to get the material to build it.
lifepod #3 is the one you want
I crafted a mobile vehicle bay a long time ago but the radio message for lifepod 19. Why?
Use your compass to find it

(Lol bad joke am I right?)
