How to breed fish?
Would make my life a lot easier, and I don't want to kill off all the fish around my base.

Alien containment with 2 of the same species fish.

As Magma Dragoon said, two fish. You need the alien containment in a Multipurpose room. The small aquarium won't breed them. If you want a large quantity of fishies you can stack mulipurpose rooms and build alien containment rooms in each. They will stack and allow you more fish.

Dead zones? STILL a thing? "Item *insert fish name here* 900", dead zone sent packing. better clarify: I wouldnt try this in your aquarium, just saying, I did this in the open ocean.

There are few different above water things to eat that you can grow in your base or cyclops. You can find them, and the grow beds you need for them on the southern floating island. It's also a good place to find your multipurpose room. Just take samples of the trees and fruit and veggies and plant them in your box. You knife the bublo tree to eat and plant a sample, pick the lantern fruit to eat and plant, pull the potatoes to eat and plant, and pull the melons to eat or knife to get 4 seeds to plant.

Melons give like 22 food 17 water, so you can put a pot in your cyclops and never need to worry about food or water as long as your knife lasts. Lantern tree doesn't need the knife and produces fruit faster than you can eat it, but only +5/3. Fruits power bioreactors for a long time too, easiest way to keep a water filter running without a vent for thermal power.

so i have a three-story tank, with two of each species inside (ampeels, crabsquids, jellyrays, etc) but they dont seem to be 'gettin busy' as it were...do fish only breed when theyre the Only species in the tank? (like, Just Spadefish?)

They should be laying eggs, but it's also possible that you have reached the limit for creatures in a tank, so they won't breed.

No, they'll breed so long as 2+ are in the tank regardless of makeup. Two possible issues for why they might not be:

1. The tank has a limit on the number of fish it can support. If it's full, you won't see any new births. It sounds like yours is pretty busy, so you might want to add one more floor to the ACU if you have the resources.

2. Even in ideal conditions, breeding takes a decent amount of time. It might be several in-game days to see any new births.

Maybe you should talk to your mother or father,
and ask them about the birds and the bees...! Lol Lol
