Yes, Marble Melons and Chinese Potatoes are good choices. You can collect seeds for them on the Flaoting Island, by cutting plants with your Knife. Latern Fruits provide both as well, but were nerfed a while back, so they aren't the superfood they used to be. Crrepvie is edible, so are many other plants. Just don't try to eat any of the mushrooms. :p

Bulbo trees are great for water too. I go with the marblemelons and bulbo trees.

Lantern fruits are great for food and Bioreactor Fuel.

I know this is a late reply, but is there any way to cook the fruits to make them last longer? Any harvested fruit has less than a day cycle life span and on default settings hunger doesn't decrease that fast.

No.

Catch fish, find salt.
Uncooked don't go off no matter how long you have then in storage and the same is true if you salt them. Only that once salted you can carry some on you until you need them.

Save the plants for when you need food when nearby or in a place you are growing them.

You can bring Gel Sacks along for long journeys if you prefer a vegetarian diet. They are a little less convenient to farm but last forever and you can just eat them if you ever end up needing the inventory space.

Wait what

You can eat those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ things?!

Can you also grow them O_o?

Yes you can grow them - but they're really "only in case of emergency" food. Just enough food/water to keep you from dying when extremely low.

Yes you can grow them. You can hit them I think twice for a couple seeds and still be able to pick it up to use, or hit it a third time for a third seed.

EDIT: they are an outside plant, so you need the blueprint for an outside growbed or alien containment unit. As opposed to like marblemelon which is grown inside.

I'm growing Melons now just because they give 4 seeds per plant so I can eat some and harvest more than I planted. That said they still go bad in less than a day cycle.
