The game's basic difficulty doesn't change, but the player becomes more skilled AND the character has better stats. What used to be difficult becomes trivial.
There is no practical solution for that. If they make the base game more difficult (so that it's reasonably difficult when you have all upgrades), new players will quit after their first attempt.
This is why I favor games with no permanent vertical progression. Roguelikes are the obvious pick for this feature since it's an absolute requirement, but also other types of run-based games with no permanent vertical progression, like for example Nuclear Throne.
If you want difficulty, you're not going to get it in Story Mode. You're going to have to play Custom with building upgrades disabled. It's what I intend to do once I've completed Story Mode.
It's my own fault for being a completionist, though. I finished the story ten runs ago and I don't need to be playing Story anymore. I could be playing Custom with building bonuses toggled off and Cthulhu toggled on, enjoying the difficulty.
The complaint was specifically for the campaign, or "Story" mode, which does not have a difficulty option. Only number of enemies, act duration and fuel.
Yeah, it makes you lose interest in an campaign that's otherwise actually quite fun. By the time I had unlocked all the rare relics I felt like each run had maybe 5% chance of dying. It only gets worse after more hideout upgrades roll in. It reminds me of having to grind low ascension levels to unlock the higher ones in Slay the Spire. It was bad there and it's bad now. Let us just jack up the difficulty in story mode so we can stay challenged --- it's a total inverse difficulty curve when the GAME becomes easier while the PLAYER simultaneously is getting more experienced. This makes the campaign into a total cakewalk some ten runs in.
This is all triply true after the recent patches carrying a rash of very strong buffs for the player, especially the ability to remove cards. (Removing cards could easily cost 2 sanity at the merchant, or sanity and gold...)
