Found a key in the first dungeon SE of town, but cant use it on door in room beyond the rocks?? It's not even in my inventory?

It is possible to kill a boss and die at the same time. That actually happened to me twice. The first time it was no problem because the boss room was fully accessible after beating it. There's a room just before the boss in the Desert Sanctuary where you have to activate a switch to spawn a temporary bridge to the boss room. If you die while killing the boss, the switch no longer spawns the bridge. Whatever the boss drops (probably a health up) is completely inaccessible, from what I can tell. Please push...
