Call of Duty: United Offensive -- "Buffer Overrun" Error
I have recently bought the Call of Duty Warchest (Call of Duty, CoD: United Offensive, CoD 2) for my PC through Steam (obviously). After attempting to install United Offensive, I ran into a problem: immediately after loading the game goes black and I get an error message saying things like "Buffer Overrun" and that the app cannot safely continue running and must terminate. Stuff like that. Naturally, I looked all over the world of Google, and found a few other poor souls with my same issue. However, all of them have had troubles running both CoD 1 and United Offensive. For me, the first game worked just fine.

People also seemed to have many different answers. Some said it was about drivers, but I don't really know anything about that, and this had to do only with people having troubles with both games. Another fix I saw was putting the file atioglxx.dll into the Call of Duty directory. I tried this, and I kept getting the same error message. I then proceeded to try it on another PC running Windows 7 (I don't know if this makes a difference or not) -- by the way, I run windows 8 on a new Lenovo laptop I got in December -- and the game launched just fine, aside from having that nonlocalized menu bug which I'll have to figure out later. The problem is that that PC is not mine, and I need it to work on my Lenovo. Convenient, right? I guess I'll fill up another page dedicated to this situation and hope that help comes along. So, that being said, is there anyone out there who has actually solved a problem similar to mine and actually knows what they're doing rather than just guessing?

Also, when I tried it on the other computer, that was without the atioglxx.dll file.

Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

Bumping this.

Same issue as yours.

Added atioglxx file, made COD1 work fine (although data wipe)

CODUO still can't work with the same error as yours.

Need help with this

If you have iNvidia, just open control panel and for COD UO change card from integrated to high-performance. Worked for my laptop.

happened the same with me yesterday. just update Nvidia and it should work.
go to bottom right of your homescreen and there you should see the nvidia bar. right click and press check updates. There, the update will be named as gta 5, download it and try again. hope it works

Hey, one thing that I found that seems to work (wasn't my idea, I found it from someone else) is to go into the call of duty game folder and rename the CoDUOSP application to "mohaa"

I have no idea why this works, and it seems it has to be that specific name, but it has worked for both COD 1 and COD:UO

Hope this helps.

your problem eh?

1- Go where you have Steam installed.

2- Copy Steam.dll and Steam2.dll from there to where you installed CoDUO.

3- Rename CoDUOSP for Single and CODUOMP for Multi to MOHAA.

4- After playing rename MOHAA to its original name back.

Repeat 3 and 4 whenever you wanna play.

Bonus- If game still doesnt work, install Visual 2005 Redistributable and try running the game.

I get this error on Steam for Linux.
Tried the mohaa method and adding this game as non-steam-game. Doesn't work.

Adding this line to the Start-options of CoDUO in Steam makes the game start.

MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2004 %command%

But as soon as i select the difficulty level the game freezes.

:(
